Dan Toth to Run in Brick GOP Mayoral Primary
Party has yet to make endorsement of a candidate
Brick councilman Dan Toth will vie for his party's nomination for mayor this year.
Toth, a Republican, told Patch he has decided against seeking the chance to run for another term on the council and has gone before a screening committee to seek the township Republican organization's endorsement to be its mayoral candidate in the current election cycle.
"I had originally screened to run both for council and mayor, and then I narrowed it down to leaving my name in just for mayor," said Toth.
The party's announcement of who it will endorse as its candidate for mayor is expected to come next week. But Toth said even if he is not endorsed, he intends to keep his name on the primary ballot.
"If I'm not selected by the screening committee, then we'll let the voters decide," he said.
Councilman Joseph Sangiovanni said he has also gone before the mayoral screening committee, but would only run if current mayor Stephen C. Acropolis were to decide against seeking re-election. He also said he would not remain in the primary race if his candidacy was not endorsed by the committee.
"The party makes the decision," he said. "I'm a party guy. I would definitely not run in a primary against someone else."
Acropolis said he will address the subject next week when the party makes its endorsements and names its candidates for mayor and council seats.
Individuals seeking to represent a political party must register for the primary election by April 1. The primary election will take place June 4, and the general election Nov. 5.
Independent candidates have until the end of the day June 4 to register to run in the general election.
This year, three council seats – currently held by council members Toth, Sangiovanni and Domenick Brando, all Republicans – are up for grabs alongside the mayor's seat, held by Acropolis, a Republican.
There was no word on who was seeking to represent the Democrats, who currently enjoy a 4-3 majority on the council, in either the council or mayoral races.

Yeah Dan. How did you manipulate Brick to ALLOW LEGAL businesses purchase/lease property in our town, then operate, pay taxes and employ our residents. What else stinks is that you did not obstruct law abiding citizens to try to pursue life, liberty and happiness......
Does that seem backwards to anyone else? And if there is any proof (for all you out there, hearsay and conjecture are kinds of evidence;), please, by all means share with the class.

I'm sure Dan is a great father, husband and friend. Alot of people are. But where was he when everyone was getting appointed to BOE & MUA positions, those unbelievable raises handed out or friends & family being given jobs. I remember the meeting when the Mayors multiple jobs were being discussed and he convientally had to leave the meeting prior to voicing his opinion. It's one think to voice your position to friends and quite another to stand up and be heard by all. They all speak about wanting to give back to their community, but all they seem to do is take, take, take. While he may be the lesser of two evils, I don't think he's the answer for Brick either. JMO

something to share with ya fella,,, and I hear ya, if you read the papers today, follow the NYT,Daily News,New York Post, Washington Times, Forbes, Star ledger and Asbury Park Press ( just to name a few).. 1 out of 8 people has filed some sort of a bankruptcey in NJ. since 2013 just in the past 3 months alone?
Life happens, people loose jobs, get down sized, get divorced, medical bills, a death to family member, what ever it is. It disrupts that persons life and current income. which leaves he or she with no alternatives but to file a Chapter 7,11 or 13.
Donald Trump has filed over 50x's times in the past 10 years - and the public will still vote for him, buy his products and watch his show.? Lydecker had her problems, and she worked through it. who cares about bankruptcey on anyones part.? Unless that person(s) did it on purpose trying to get away from something.
But wait; until our property taxes doubble, watch how many people walk from their homes and file a Chpt 7, 13 or walk into forclosure.. due to hurricane Sandy - because they had no other choice but to do so.
I live in a community, I know 40 people who've filed at some point in their life. back in the 70's - 90's it was a big thing. Today, it's a smart option if your trying to clean up challenges that were given to you due to circumstances that you had no control over.

Dan is a down-to-earth, regular guy. He understands what it's like to work hard to be able to afford to live in this town and raise a family. He's been a part of politics to make things better for Brick residents. Since he's been on the council he always has welcomed comments and feedback, has posted office hours and his email and phone number so people can contact him when they need to. As long as I've known him he's always done what he thinks is right, even if that means going against the grain and against what some of his fellow Republicans tell him he should vote for. And yes, this is politics, and politics get messy, but I still can't understand the animosity that some of you people have for him.

Topps,
Dan Toth may never get elected. Reasons include (but not limited to):
1)Opposition by tax and spenders and current long time R(epublican) I(n) N(ame) O(nly)s
2) Fraternity as it exists in the BTRC is short on members and of the members, are mostly Good Ole Boy supporters. It has been amazing to me to see the number of residents that have voted for Mr. Toth in prior elections, regardless of party.
3)Taxes are high in the USA,NJ, Ocean County and Brick. One man can not dictate this in its entirety
However, he will continue with his brand of conservatism until those who don't know or don't care wake up. I remember years of Democrat party rule where things didn't go perfectly or leave pristine waters in their wake.....Which is why there are Republicans where they are now, with it being theirs to lose. Rate increases have at least become stable in recent years, in part to the state gov. and in part to local gov. There was talk of Mr. Toth going to the Democratic Party for years, but it was nothing but suggestions from long time republicans in order to secure the mayor's office. Please reply.

I think he stinks! I can't believe he hasn't been brought up on charges for using his power to gain favors for his businesses. Everybody else has to wait and wait and wait to get things done. But he does things his way by abusing his powers as a council member. Why do you think the Mayor had him behind closed doors and use this so that Dan would change his vote or what he usually does is abstain from most of the voting. We all know the truth behind what really went on. Either way we need new blood from the republicans. If they were smart they won't back ANY of the existing council members. They all stink and we want them all out. Otherwise you are gonna wind up giving the democrats the vote, because most of the people in this town are sick and tired of these clowns. I usually vote republican but I won't vote for any of them if they have the nerve to run. They have sucked enough of my money and have done nothing. And he doesn't always go against the grain especially if the Mayor has something to hold over his head. He promised my neighbor last year that the Angela Hibbard Park was next on the list for a whole new park. We'll I guess us people down here in Shore Acres and Baywood mean nothing because look at it. It's the worst park in town! We already lost everything I guess the council members figure why should we have something to look forward to. We are forgotten people down here and the council makes sure of it. I'm sure the Colorado park will get done before ours.

Betty,
Please provide evidence of your allegations of corruption, and if true, there should be investigations and prosecution. I understand your frustrations, as I am a life long Brick Township resident who was dealt 20 years of promises about the Route 70/88 Circle. From what I have seen in politics, this guy (as with all politicians) can not make everything happen by himself or overnight. He does, however, provide contact information for all residents to contact him and he encourages it. If you provide your evidence of corruption you will sway my opinion as well as many others I am sure. Having known Dan for years, I know what he is up against in 'The R Club' with few left other than Acropolis/Sangiovanni supporters. One way that we CAN make a difference is to push a non-partisan agenda to begin to cut away the politics from our elections and candidates. Otherwise, I hope that your section of town is improved in a timely manner, as it seems that you care for our town more than most.

SuperDan...able to throw the neighborhoods meeting people in a single walk. Worst part of the story is that you allow your autistic child to answer the door to strangers and taught him that after he has allowed the 'stranger danger' past the security of a locked door, he should state the danger and then retreat.
Best part of the story is the neighborhood meeting people getting thrown. Funny, I didn't hear that part till now.
Now for the tough part. Maybe do something that would provide you with a story that does not exploit your son's disability as the best story ever. Or not.

I have to add, Mayor Acropolis, has been doing his part over the past 5 months. Regardless of what happend before Sandy.
In the past - I may have agreed with you then. But, these 5 months, Acropolis has been acting and doing what he was elected to do, be a Mayor to handle great responsibility when called upon.
Would you or anyone else like to take action and to be responsible for the thousands of Brick residents here.? I wouldn't, besides, I'm old and retired.
I was a corporate executive for 20+years and responsible for several offices with maybe 5000 employees. The money was great, but the stress was too much for one person. I can recognize when someone else steps up to the plate and takes on responsibility going forward.
Right now, the town needs their Mayor and their Council to be apart of one team working together. not back stabbing and tossing mudd looking for a postion. in business, that only shows a weakness. right now, we need team work and leadership.
anyone remember Corzine ( the old guy dating the young woman who left her husband for a rich guy that owned a big financial firm somewhere?), how would he have handled this.?

I have to agree that the Mayor has done a good job with the Hurricane, BUT there will come a time that a conclusion will come to the hurricane disaster and I'm afraid, very afraid that Acropolis will go back to business as usual, that is a chance I'm not willing to take. When I hire somebody to do a job, I look at his/her performance as a whole, not just one part. It's like an actor that did well in one movie that makes a ton of money, the studio then banks on that actor to be in a few more movies and they bomb big time because of that actor. It becomes apparent that it was the first movie and the writing of that part that made the role, not the actors acting abilities. Unfortunately this is the way I look at Steve Acropolis, he was good with the hurricane problem, but not so much with the rest of the problems we had in town. While I joke around sometimes, I'm very serious behind the curtain of the voting booth. I will be watching and listening very carefully to each and every person who may run for mayor, except for one. Sorry Steve. Also remember it's not the party but the person. Let's pick a good one this time around! Screw that party crap.

Happy to hear Dan Toth is running for mayor. He has put in his time gaining experience with council and the local boards he has served.
This primary election should be about the future of Brick Township and what vision each candidate brings to the table. My expectation is that the local party doesn't like primary challenge and will circle their wagons behind their chosen candidates. I would hope they would enjoy the active debate on issues and the opportunity for new members to join their ranks in the upcoming months.

There's not enough input in either party by ordinary people, too much control by party bosses and too much influence by campaign contributors. Mary Lou: What you are saying here supports my position that Brick should return to non-partisan government whereby any person can enter the race as was done before your party enabled a change to partisan government under a label of BANG (Bring About New Government)! Except for one election cycle Brick always had numerous candidates under non-partisan government for the people to choose from. True… the parties ran their candidates as well, but with no party designation in campaign literature or on the ballot, nearly everyone had an equal chance of being elected. People had to vote on what the candidate offered, and not whether they were a Democrat or Republican. We need people who will act for the benefit of the people of Brick and not for the party or the party bosses! Maybe we should start a new movement. We can call it BONG (Bring On Non-partisan Government)!

Do the same people blame the owners of McDonald's for making their kids fat, probably. The old school Republicans don't like Councilman Toth because he actually votes his concious (can you imagine such a thing) and not along party lines. If you're going to trash someone at least have the b@ll$ to use your name and not hide behind a made up one. Good luck Dan and keep up the good work.

I laugh at some of the criticism of Dan Toth. He actual speaks to members of the Democratic Party! In a civil manner no less!! Boy, I can certainly understand why someone would take issue with an R speaking respectfully to a D after the way the current Mayor has spoken to the Ds for years. Yes it IS time for a change in Brick. Time to join together for the common good of ALL the people. Dan Toth is the man to get it done. BTW I put my name on any post I make. Denny D'Andrea

Again, what has he accomplished? He probably is a great guy...but....that alone won't get the job done. He was silent on Bellu's raise, jobs being given out to friends & family. I never heard him say anything, about several township employee's being harassed about having opposing candidates signs on their personal cars or lawns. I remember his big push on "cats", but what has he actually done to make Brick a better, safer place to live. I don't know who out there is the answer, but in my opinion, it's not him.

OK this is for all you Danny Zombies, check on how many important votes he missed by not being at the meeting, check how many votes he has abstained on for multiple reasons, he is I can’t even call him a part time councilman he participates fare less that a part timer would (unless the vote would benefit his political future), so how can you vote for this semi councilman?

I have to say a few things about Dan Toth. Aside from everyone else's comments about a great man and a great father , etc., there are many other great things about him. Unlike most politicians, Dan doesn't have a municipal job. He is a self-starter and actually has a business that he has grown all by himself. He knows when to expand and when/where to cut your losses for a balanced budget. He makes great decisions that are completely thought through as opposed to spur-of -the-moment ones with no planning in sight. He works hard in our community and tries to help others as well succeed. If helping liquor stores may have helped him, then they too, are obviously doing well and not by whatever you people feel may have been an inside thing. He likes to see all forms of local business succeed. His attitude is about success and what is right. When the snowstorm issue arose the other year with the Mayor's lack of direction, it was Dan who put his number out and told people to contact him, not Acropolis. He doesn't hide like the rest, but stands in front to take any criticism without prejudice or malice. As someone else wrote earlier, he takes a salary for Councilman. A part time job that could barely pay taxes OR utilities in Brick. Get real. He doesn't showboat and doesn't live extravagant. He is just like Joe Public and respects the working man. He has got my vote!

Dan Toth had been doing exactly the same thing and had been in on everything that Acropolis, Brando, Sangiovanni, Deluca, Matthews, Ruth Ann Scaturo, and Thulen had been doing up until the last election. Dan Toth saw the election results and started distancing himself from the GOP members. He would do well to now distance himself from the current dem council people because they are disliked more than Acrapolis. Out of all the GOP mentioned above, I would venture to say that Thulen is the most trustwothy. Too bad that is the same as being the tallest person in a room full of midgets or the same thing as being the smartest kid in summer school.

Hmmm,
Funny thing about Mr. Toth, is it seems he has been distancing himself from the the before-mentioned for years, which is quite apparent if you have been paying attention to his voting against the 'pet' projects that some of the same before-mentioned were trying to push thru. Furthermore, it may be in your best interest in order find out some facts instead your derogatory statements about our fellow citizens stature or some of the individuals that required summer school to be able to walk away with a diploma and have since become productive members of society. Taking cheap shots is easy, actually speaking about issues in an intelligent and informative manner can actually help those who wish to participate in our electoral process. ALSO, my understanding is that Mr. Toth is trying to distance himself from the political process that was changed from NON-partisan to partisan by beginning the dialog that would remove partisan labels from candidates and actually require (to some degree) that candidates be knowledgeable AND remove the partisan shield that so many hide behind.

Fiscal Conservative: Your comments concerning non-partisan government are well stated! See my reply to Mary Lou Powner above. Also, I would like to add that Dan Toth earned my respect after former mayor Dan Newman, a Democrat, passed away. A controversy developed about the American flag at town hall being put at half mast to honor the late mayor, but current mayor Acropolis ordered the flag to be raised. Republican Dan Toth defied the mayor and lowered the flag back down. That took courage that few others possess! This doesn't mean he is necessarily mayor material, but it does speak volumes about his character.

Maybe this is the incorrect place to ask, but a few council meetings ago, you'll all remember that the Council delayed the meeting by about 20 minutes....leaving everyone in the room waiting. That delay was caused by the Council with the attorney trying last minute to add liens to peoples homes who were going to need debris removal, whether you lived on the island or inland. Then it was removed from the vote. Which council person had the idea to do that in the first place? thank you.

Theres too much going on now for this fella to run,Politics, Ethics,Lawyers,Scams, leaving the Brick GOP, going independent ? what could possibly be next?
After Dan cleans up this mess, maybe in a couple years he can try to run again, either for the Dems or continue the path of a independent perhaps?
