County's Mantoloking Bridge Park Officially Open

Park expected to draw anglers, crabbers to Brick

County officials this week formally opened the new Mantoloking Bridge County Park, a fishing and recreational area on the Brick side of the Mantoloking Bridge that will cater to anglers, crabbers and sightseers.

The park features a new, 70-foot-long fishing and crabbing pier, a boardwalk, picnic area, sun shade, gazebo and lighted paths. It also includes a connecting path that leads to a second, 152-foot-long fishing pier on the south side of the bridge which was made out of a portion of the previous span that was replaced in 2006.

Work on the park, which cost $1.4 million to build, began in May 2011. Visitors have been allowed inside the park for most of this summer, however its formal completion and opening occurred this week.

The park was busy Thursday, with plenty of locals crabbing, fishing and taking scenic photos with their cameras.

"This park will be great not only during the tourism season but also for our year-round residents," said Freeholder Joseph H. Vicari. "It combines a part of this county’s rich history and our bay heritage. It brings a number of recreational benefits to Brick Township, Mantoloking and the surrounding area."

The park will eventually be connected to the park that Brick Township is building at the site of the former Traders Cove Marina. That site should be ready next year, officials have said.

The county portion provides parking for 55 vehicles as well as restroom facilities.

The park is already proving popular with local anglers and crabbers, said Pete Ordeman, owner of Pell's Fish and Sport, a bait and tackle shop a few minutes up Mantoloking Road.

"People are already using it," he said. "It's becoming pretty popular."

Ordeman said Thursday that anglers are discovering the local population of snapper bluefish in the area. A few blowfish have been caught recently.

"The setting could not be better for visitors and citizens," said Freeholder Director Gerry P. Little. "You can do so much here while enjoying Barnegat Bay, truly an environmental gem here in Ocean County."

Work on the park, which cost $1.4 million to build, began in May 2011.

It would have cost a private company $500,000 to get this done.
It cost the county $1.4 million to get this done.
It cost Brick Twp $15 million dollars to get this done. (and we still aren't done.)

Nice park though. Just hope it doesn't get overrun by the Lakewood mafia like some of the other parks.

Please excuse my lack of knowledge on this, as I never even heard of this project. How do you know it would have only cost $500k? (again I never heard of this and do not know much about it) Thanks!

Once the riff raff start causing trouble and congregating there at night, they will have to.increase police patrol ....then the 1.4mil will turn in to a lot more.

A lot of negative comments! I believe citizens are those who live in the county and visitors are those who visit the county! I've been driving by and boating by and it looks very inviting!

Really? not trying to be mean, But there areasre lots that are just over grown lots, stores empty, / or closing.... it just seems to me that the town could have used that money more wisely, ( exp the Brick High school IS STILL falling apart) & NOW we have a really nice walking path...

yeah... dont really have time to enjoy a park... I work 45 hrs a week & my husband works about 55-60 hrs a week ..( maybe if we all didnt have to work like animals just to make ends meet we could enjoy parks during the day) . with 3 teenagers we dont really have the time to go to the park. Would have much rather seen the money going to rebuilding our schools or creating something in the town that would bring in money NOT loss it... (( Did we as tax payers even have a say in this project?) NOT that is NOT nice, ...But another point, Where did all those boats go that where there??? @ Fred Noone is saying its not nice, its just seems kind of a waste of funds & Very unfinished

Dan Nee, can you tell us if the money for the park was a grant? I could be wrong but I am pretty sure money that the town has raised, cannot just be handed over to the Board of Education to improve schools. Is that correct? I do not think the school budget has passed in several years, and that is why the schools are not being upgraded. Dan do you have any records the last time the school budget was passed by the voters the past few years? You are very good at responding to questions and have great resources. We would appreciate it if you could update us on this.

Tim -- I do not recall hearing that grant money was involved in this project. Just keep in mind that this was a county project, not a township project. They're working with a much larger budget than municipal govermment. And you are correct in that neither township nor county tax money can be transferred to the school district for improvements, repairs or capital projects. Offhand, I don't know the last year the budget passed, but this year there was no budget vote since it was under the 2 percent tax levy cap.

D5557 The reference is this I believe: Most of our parks and recreation are frequented by the community from Lakewood who for whatever reason, choose to use Brick libraries and parks in lieu of their own. Often they do not come as couples or a family - entire enclaves come. They seem to like it here over their own township. I can't imagine why.

@D5557...have you set foot in the schools recently? Most people who think their money is going to fix up the schools are very out of touch with what our schools are actually like. I teach in brick and can assure you that your money is not being spent how you think it is.....as I buy my students supplies out of my own pocket, while they sit in a decrepit, rundown school building. But, hey, at least we have a pretty walkway to go fishing at now.

The condition of Brick High School is absolutely deplorable. Nothing more than a mere whitewashing of lockers has occurred since the building was erected years ago. Administration should all be forced to teach half of the day. You want to be in education? Be in education, not in an air-conditioned office hiding.

Holy geez, $1.4 million could have seriously helped Brick HS. Anglers and crabbers have a place to go while our children sit in shambles. I do not have children in the HS, but am aware of the deplorable conditions. The priorities of this administration continue to dumbfound.

Okay Guys, no I have not stepped foot in the highschool. I don't have children. I have plenty of family who are teachers (not in brick) as I'm told every teacher must by there own supplies. I remember going to my highschool which was three stories high fully air conditioned & also remember getting paper & pens if need. Now all the parents must supply pencils to glue a little outrageous for me. I really don't think the community of Lakewood will show up this is more water related activities. Most can't swim! Hahaha
I think its nice & a nice peaceful place to go w/nieces, nephews& god children. Don forget that was all sand, no lighting, no, buildings etc. Yes, it could have perhaps been less expensive. But really what control do we have over the twp. Just enjoy and don't worry about who will be there, who cares if you are enjoying yourself.

For the record, everyone, this was a county project - it had nothing to do with the Brick mayor or council. County tax money cannot go toward repairs or improvements at local schools. For that matter, neither can municipal tax money. For the large-scale repairs at schools within the Brick district you guys are talking about, funding must come from the district's capital budget or via a referendum approved by a vote of the taxpayers (if the project is large enough).

I don't often give an opinion on these things, but I want to paint the big picture. First, the park is absolutely beautiful. It's now complete, and I think everyone would enjoy it. It is already having a positive effect on our business community, too, since people are shopping at the local bait shops and probably will stop by the Crab Shack or some of the local delis for snacks and sandwiches. Public access to Barnegat Bay is a precious thing, and in the long run, $1.4 million of the entire $354 million county budget is peanuts to preserve and improve something so unfortunately rare as bayfront access that can be enjoyed by everyone.

Thank you Dan for explaining the above. People just go on and on not realizing this money has nothing to do with other projects. Thanks again. I am a user of the park and think it's great.

Dan,
Any chance we can get the county to fund a small 50 foot by 50 foot park in the vicinity of Glenwood Ave? The town can donate the land on that portion of land which is a paper street.

Years ago when Traders Cove was first purchased, it was supposed to be a combination of the Township, County and State all contributing to the cost. Brick's portion then was $700,000. Our Administration then wanted the State out of the purchase because of control issues. When the division of the property was finally approved, the County paid for their portion of the purchase and completed the Park as promised. Dan, maybe you could do a story on the history of Traders Cove going back to the beginning.

My husband and I took our children there today to crab and fish, what a great place. Its VERY hard to find place to crab and fish with the kids and have it kid friendly. There is a lot of room and there is bathrooms on the property. We mainly fish in Monmouth Co., but we will be heading down to this spot more often. Traveling 25 minutes is so worth it.
