Christie to Hold 'Town Hall' in Brick Tuesday Afternoon

Governor will host 'town hall' meeting at Lake Riviera Middle School as budget battle looms

Gov. Chris Christie will host a town hall meeting in Brick Tuesday, his office said last week.

The meeting will be held at Lake Riviera Middle School off Beaverson Boulevard. Doors open at 2:15 p.m. and seating will be on a first come, first serve basis, Christie's staffers said. The event is open to the public.

The governor's ongoing series of town halls, where queries from the public are taken in addition to the governor's statements, are often packed events that cover a range of topics concerning both state and local issues.

Previous town halls held throughout the state have seen Christie go on the offensive against political rivals, promote his public policy agenda and, occasionally, survive some heckling.

The Brick appearance could prove especially interesting for political observers, as it will come just days before the state's fiscal year comes to an end July 1.

Christie, a Republican, and Democrats in the state legislature have locked horns in recent weeks over the governor's plan to cut state income tax rates by 10 percent over three years despite a level of uncertainty surrounding state revenue projections.

Other ongoing debates this budget season have included the administration's plan to merge Rutgers University in Camden with Rowan University, as well as a transportation borrowing plan that has drawn the ire of some conservatives.

Residents interested in attending the meeting can call the governor’s office at 609-777-2500 for more information or to RSVP.

I will be attending the meeting next Tuesday and I do not live in a retirement community as the previous 2 comments have suggested. Rather than slamming our governor, I suggest they look to our president and voice that same comment to him. Can we not just enjoy the moment when someone takes the time to visit our town!

I don't think anyone 'slammed' the govenor. If that happened, I really need to look over my definition of the word. Also, I don't see how this relates to the president. The issue people had was that the govenor is holding a 'town hall meeting' on a Tuesday at 2:15 PM - how many working adults are going to be able to attend this? Wouldn't we like to believe that the govenor has the concerns of his working, tax paying, presumably-middle aged, middle class population in mind (it's fun to use those buzz words)?

Govenor Christie is having this meeting here for obvious reasons, the Govenor's office doesn't just schedule meetings whenever. The time and location were picked on purpose. It may bother you to hear, but the school is nearly surrounded by retirement communities from Brick, Toms River, and Lakewood. Christie is placating to his tax concerned, conservative leaning elders before the end of a fiscal year. The elderly are concerned about rising taxes - they're consistently challenging the budget of Brick schools (LRMS). It's the perfect arena for Christie - he'll have supporters who aren't even sure what they're supporting, just as long as it doesn't raise their taxes!

I'm not sure you're aware of the local voting trends. Senior citizens (generally, former residents of North Jersey counties) have made up the bulk of Ocean County's Democratic base for decades.

Also, there is nothing unique in Brick regarding the timing. Working for a media organization I receive all of the announcements from the governor's office. Anecdotally, just about every one of these town hall meetings I've seen (whether in a town like Brick or an urban area up north) have been held around the same time as this one will be.

Comment_arrow

M

11:24 am on Tuesday, June 19, 2012

@Daniel Nee - While I'll admit to my bias of believing most of the seniors have conservative beliefs, you'll notice that I never assigned them party status.

My comment was centered more around the politicizing of the event itself. On that note- Christie did receive 67% of the vote in the last election from Brick voters, compared to the 48.5 he received in the entire state. Christie has an inherent interest in finding an audience that will be generally receptive to what he'll be speaking about.

Also, I understand that the timing is nothing out of the norm, but if we dig deeper at why the time is used in the first place do you not wonder why it would be chosen? Certainly, we can't tell ourselves that 2:15 PM in Brick, a 10:15 AM visit in Cedar Grove today, a 2:30 PM event in Galloway on the 13th, are practical for the majority of concerned voters. It may not be unique, but it's certainly worth questioning why more politicians wouldn't open themselves up to a more agreeable time.

To support my view of town hall events, I'm sure I could find a significant amount of supporting evidence, but I'll choose to use another NJ Shore publication for a bit of shore-style credibility. See here > http://www.shorenewstoday.com/snt/news/index.php/politics/26212-christies-town-hall-meeting-is-just-more-political-spin.html

@ Daniel Nee, As a working Ocean Democrat since my teens I have seen some of our worst numbers come from Ocean County senior's and it is my beleif that those very 55 plus areas are in fact one of the only things keeping the R's in control. For years we have talked about how the senior's move down here Democrats and turn into Republicans as the cross the boarder of the County. I understand your comment about the press times of these events but I think that is exactly what they are complaining about. How can working class people show up to these. @JHill - Nobody deserves pensions???? I work in a school and I am a memeber of the NJEA. (not a teacher) Referring to your phrase "giving out pensions" - Get your facts straight - there is no "Giving out". I have paid into my pension for 23 years which includes the new higher percent. I have also contributed to my health benefits for 23 years. Most people are under the impression that we (including teachers) do not and have never contributed to anything. However, now we have a sliding scale which is higher than our previous contribution for med. benefits. ButMorgan Chase, most of all, REALLLLY - do you think Morgan Stanley, Lehman Brothers, Morgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, AT&T, just to name a few, will not contribute to their employees pensions? Do you think they will go bankrupt for giving out the largest raises and bonuses ever? I don't think so. Entitlement - yes for anything I have struggled to partially or fully pay for .

For you to imply that non-union workers wish for a perk like a day off just makes you an idiot. If I didn't work for my income, how would you union workers enjoy your personal days or salaries that my job, or those jobs of the Walmart workers, provide to you??? But please do not rub it in the faces of people who are "at will" employees and need to show up every day for fear they may lose their job for calling out. Those who have had union protection all of their lives have absolutely no idea what it's like to work in the the real world. Some people just can't call out or take a day off. We don't have a grievance committee to settle disputes. If you don't show up or call out too often, you can lose your job and there's no union rep to fight on your behalf.

I just don't see how in this day and age unions are still needed. All that is needed is a good HR department like most companies have to handle issues. I know many people who are in unions, family included, and I hate to say it but they are some of the laziest, out of touch people I've ever seen. None of them would ever survive in a non-union job. Also, immigrants in general - not focused on illegal, are very affected by health insurance costs. Out of immigrants arriving from 2000-2008, 45.9% do not have any form of health insurance - this is including legal immigration(Table 2 of link below). I would venture a guess that illegal immigrants are even less likely to have proper health insurance as they're unable to provide documentation. CIS.org estimates that 64% of illegal immigrants do not have health insurance.

Makes me wonder how many people who have received tickets at Bricks red light cameras are due a refund, which brings up many questions, how does one go about getting a refund, how long have these lights not been in compliance, from day one? Will one have to hire a lawyer to get a refund (think the towns going to give up that cash without a fight, think again, even though it's their fault). Are the people in Brick thinking, Here's another nice mess you got us into Stevie? Without a doubt.

There are more people on food stamps than ever before, the adverage income fell $4,000 a year, unemployment is still over 8.2%, only 40% of teens can find summer jobs and 50% of college graduates will find jobs. But hey, Obama feels for the 800,000 ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS and will grant them a 2 year work visa, (thats just the start) for amnesty. What about the AMERICAN YOUTH? I'll take Romney anyday over Obama!

Immigrants?..... The dream bill to give immigrants who served in the military,a path to citizenship was designed by Republican Orin Hatch in 2003. The Repulicans defeated it recently and that weasel Hatch abstained on his own bill. People like you only watch Fox Noise talking points and then show how myopic you are.

That being said, even though there was a majority of democrats in the senate, there NEVER was a super majority to stop a RECORD number of Republican filibusters on EVERY jobs bill that was submitted by Democrats.
I love paying my share of taxes while even MORE money is stashed in Swiss banks and The Cayman islands for out of touch CEO'S like Romney who plays by a different set of rules than we all do. In fact he just transferred $100M to his sons. We would be taxed on anything over (approx)$11K.
Some of those so called backroom deals on The Affordable Care Act kept the insurance companies on board, by supplying them a bigger pool of health care recipients. I personally would have preferred single payer.
Campaign donors? Not even close to the Super-Pac money going to Romney from corporations, some of which are multi-national and foreign. I almost don't even want to offer you a response, your comments seem driven by an underlying anger. Anyway, I wanted to ask you to defend some of your talking points, specifically what you would do differently if you were to have been in power. You've pointed out shortcomings and perceived failures, but you haven't offered alternatives or reasoning. Also, your appraisal of Obama's failure for not 'getting things done' is worth examining - he can't just make laws and pass them. He came into power in the worst of times for the economy and followed a bailout programs originally designed by the Bush administration. So, as TARP funds were distributed, was he then to just throw some money around and create jobs? The government had to wait for the effects of the bailout.

Also, I'm always interested in hearing about concerns with Obama-care, which (cliche as it sounds now) was clearly spun off of Romney-care. You say it was jammed down your throat, but you'd also like to see Romney as president over Obama - do you think Romney was different in his approach or are you just against universal healthcare and any attempts to achieve it?

In regards to the '800,000' illegal immigrants- do you really think Romney is going to have the answer? What do you think he will do differently? If you ask me, a businessman like Romney is well aware of how beneficial cheap and expendable labor can be.

Specific to the immigrant/job point - this may seem like a tired point, but do you think that all Americans would do the jobs that illegal immigrants perform. Do you know of illegal immigrants that are in professional roles? Immigrants, illegal or not, benefit from the 'freedom for all' decree of the US and we benfit from a diversification in culture and possibly even their competition in the work place (think of the 'good' of capitalist competition).

My point is that most of the illegal immigrants people refer to are working jobs as low-end cooks, dishwashers, landscaping, roofing, general construction, etc. These jobs are intensive, have varied hours, and are not attractive to most (dare I say) white bread Americans. Of course, if we look at the numbers...yes, illegal immigrants are working here and filling jobs;however, their willingness to work for below average (or below minimum) wages are an unseen force in keeping a fragile economy afloat. if regular Americans want to lay sod, spread mulch, clean plates, and nail shingles to a roof- the jobs are there, that's how immigrants found them. In my view, shared with others, they're not harming you or anyone in the way you think.

We're far from the most generous country on earth. I don't say this to be confrontational, but please, please, please substaniate that claim of yours for me. We may have advanced technology, but there are a multitude of factors. Our costs are out on control and our access to proper care is embarrassing.

2010 World Health Org. ranks US at 37th in the world, yet we spend the MOST per capita. Somehow, we ranked ranked 39th for infant mortality, 43rd for adult female mortality, 42nd for adult male mortality, and 36th for life expectancy (see link). New England Journal of Medicine - http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp0910064

You say we don't need to be mandated to do what is right, but this is absolutely a market failure. That is why there's action being taken.

They are being paid sometimes not even minimim wage, by farmers or others that will sometimes cheat them out of pay, knowing these immigrants cant go anywhere to complain. Most of the money paid to them is tax free and goes back to families in other countries. Meanwhile we are educating, housing and feeding alot of them. So i dont believe its not affecting taxpayers. It is.

We can agree on the greatness. I believe we'd also be able to agree that intelligent and thoughful discourse is useful in continuing our greatness. With that said, if I (or others) feel that our 'greatness' is on the decline, I'd be doing myself and country a disservice by not pointing out our shortcomings for the sake of maintaining a false sense of national pride and superiority.

I'll give you that there are some unemployed that have given up for work and that these unemployed and under-employed are not counted in the official figures. Keep in mind that even with that, you are not even close to the job loss of 750k/mo under Bush.
For you to say that illegals were given jobs also is a weak argument.
When Bush was president, these same illegals were doing the same crappy jobs that they are doing today. The 'status quo' whites(and others) were sitting at home playing video games and getting obese while immigrants were cutting lawns, picking lettuce, cleaning toilets, etc for American bosses including midwest meat packing corporations. They were paid under the table not just for their own sake. It makes more sense to me that, since they DO these jobs, that they become legal AND PAY THEIR TAXES INTO THE SYSTEM.
If you want to blame someone for your failures, look in the mirror and ask yourself why you support the party of corporate greed that keeps stepping on good middle class jobs.

Looks like deportation under Hoover, Truman, and Ike(not FDR) never worked. Again, too many crappy jobs at low wages that USA citizens did not want to do. Especially since American business owners (ala Mitt Romney) would be too happy to underpay a worker for the sake of a few at the top.
Truman and Ike were worried about jobs for returning vets.
Speaking of Ike, today he would be considered a socialist by the current Republican disaster. Even though the DEBT/GDP ratio was 127% because of WWii, he still SPENT tons of money on highway projects, bridges, water systems etc.
The result was a growth and prosperity period for workers regardless of the immigrant issues. These jobs were paying living wages for UNIONIZED workers.
Today the Debt/GDP ratio is around 90% and Republicans are blocking all jobs bills in the Senate ,including transportation bills, for political reasons only. These are not jobs for illegals, but fair wage jobs for people who are out of work.

Buddy - he should care because the people of NJ were told NJ would do their share. In a few years after it is apparent Gov Christie did not keep his promises, but took more money from the employees, the people are going to blame the workers again. They are paying their fair share, and all the "share the sacrifice" has proven to be lies. We better wake up - the pension system is not fixed, and by ignoring it, we are only making the public employee an even bigger enemy of the people. Good job, Christie! He truly has divided and conquered.

Gene, Last time I checked, people vote not PAC's and the people voted for Chris Christie because they felt he would do the best job. It’s my understanding that most people feel they made the correct choice. That said, you’re saying if someone doesn’t agree with you then they are a "low information voter" and suppressed.
I don't care what political party someone belongs to, I happen to have formal leadership training and see a good leader in our governor but if I simply say thanks and good job it's a "rah rah statement". Nothing personal, but as long as it’s ok with the patch moderator, I say whatever I want...Without the personal attacks.
Once again feel free to vote for whomever you wish.

Stinger.... If you don't think big money influences elections, take a look at the recall vote in Wisconsin, where the Democrats were outspent 8 to 1 from money that came from out of state.
Voter suppresion is a Fact in states controlled by Republicans. Paul Weyrich(founder of the conservative Heritage Foundation)makes his point in 1980)

this week democrats in trenton voted that millionaires will get tax hikes instead of the middle class for a change. cell phones while driving will also start seeing real fines. christie had a tantrum over both. what does he care he is driven or flown everywhere so no one can give him a ticket for driving while on the phone.

Aw, Charlie, that's not bein' fair.... He could bring his own boat and mebbe a bucket
to bail us out instead of cussin' us... After all, most heavy-set persons are normally good-natured and are noted for their dancing ability. Of course, if memory serves me correctly, didn't New Jersey have a Governor a couple of Governor's ago who also was commented upon for his "Dancing". Governor McCrazytoes be's his name!!! That's right. And we had Christie Horsefarm who tucked that farm underneath the tax-exempt farm status during her wonderful leadershi[p. AND we were further blessed with 95 MPH down the Parkway Corzine who also was able to misplace 2 BILLION DOLLARS of WALL ST. MONEY WHEN HE WAS THE BOSS OF THAT WALL ST. INVESTMENT FIRM. WONDER HOW HE TREATED NJ TAXPAYER MONEY???

No wonder the NJ public looks askance at any jerk who seems to fill (and I mean FILL) the Governor's chair!!! Is there ANYONE available who we might TRUST???

10% Tax Cut NOW

Chris Smith would be a good choice - but his knowledge on global matters would be lost. The bully pulpit Governor should work with our Senate & Assembly instead of the political Saprano style tactics. Start working for all the people not just your Romney/Gilmore connected freinds.

Just a FYI, All NJ unemployement extentions will be no longer after July 5th ( or 7th) even if you have money left on your claim, OUR STATE IS RUNNING OUT OF MONEY!!!! its going to go even faster when ppl stop getting unemployement & have to go on welfare.... YES some are abusing the system, But full time jobs to support a family JUST are not out there ...

Gov Christie claims he created jobs! The fact is no he has not. How many jobs were lost? More than created. He needs to stop saying he was working on the 10% tax cut when he knew he couldn't give it to us. He did it to blame the democrats when they say it can't happen. He flys around supporting Romney at our expense. Nobody is allowed to do that at any job unless they want to be unemployed. He should pay back those days.

My dad was a teamster for 43 years and worked 70 plus hours and got a pension and medical that was better than the state could ever provide so maybe they should look into how they operate and not allow skipped pension payments.

How does the Gov address the shortfall in his budget ?
Why aren't the the middle class & Christie friends dealt evenly ?
Stop the Farm Tax benifit on the political connected friends.
Mr.Gov CC please don't place tha blame on the Senate & Assembly but place the blame on your own Administration for this ill concieved budget plan.
It must be hard to listen to your own retoric the story is getting old.

Just got home from the "town hall" love fest. All the politicos, BOE members, school administration, etc. All smiling at one another like it was party time. Christie was lobbed about 12 softballs. Not one hard question so he didn't have to go into Rambo mode. He is personable enough to get rid of the tough guy stuff. He is on top of his game, the man is no dummy, so he should stay on an even keel. As I said, he didn't have one "tough(adversarial)" question to answer so it was virtually a "lovefest". LOL

Mostly gray hairs. There were a bunch of younger kids sitting up front. They appeared to be National Honor type kids. One young man from Middletown(attends CBA) asked a question regarding the possibility of a flat tax and the Governor answered him directly and correctly. The only one that spoke was the Governor and the dozen people who asked "softball" questions.

By the way, I saw some pictures of Chris as a high school senior, and others of his mom dad siblings and himself on the beach when he was a little boy. There is no way he can say his condition is due to genes. His entire family was thin and he was as a young man. This is not an illness or something he can't help unless he helped himself.

why are so many ( assuming grown people) here are commenting about his weight... Just seems childish & " cyber bullying" isnt that a NONO now a days & telling kids not to do it... somehow its acceptable because its about weight ... if it was race or religion or sexual pref, you all would be banned, but some how its ok to make fun of someone thats overweight, NO Iam not,,,, but have family members that are, & its a life struggle, & get really annoyed that its ok to still " bully" people that are over weight!! ,& teaching your kids that its ok just STOP IT,& GROW UP !! I assure you a heavy person KNOWS their heavy, they dont need anyone to point to out to them. A person can lose weight ( sometimes) But Mean people will always be mean...

Also, to all those naysayers who were prepared to tell the Governor what they think on how things should be done... how come no one opened their mouths inside during the town hall meeting???? Thank you Dan Nee for your comments. It is nice that you keep the statments accurate.

Were you there BAF? People raised their hands and Christie selected who he wanted to ask him a question. It was a very pro Republican audience and only one person asked anything slightly negative. He was a pastor of some sort and was asking about jobs for his flock. Christie acknowledged that job creation was going slow and offered reasons why.

Liberal ranting. All talk, no facts. It has been going on for decades and yet, they still come back to the same spot. So much for FORWARD.

Question: Why can’t liberals find facts?
Answer: They aren’t looking for any.

@TimeFor Change - You're only perpetuating the immaturity of some areas of this thread. You just made multiple assertions there about ranting, decades of ranting, no progress - please, support your broad claim with some facts. The irony here is great! (Other viewers/commentors - note that I don't see anything of any substance to be discussed)

Also, I consider myself fairly liberal. I like to think I back up my replies with facts. So far, you've responded only with comments about 'liberal crap' (complete with emoticon) and 'liberal ranting', not to mention your loosely placed 'commie' remark that was directed towards the Democratic party. Care to elaborate? Please offer some evidence on communist activity and/or ideologies you've seen with Democrats and could you also describe how liberal ranting differs from conservative ranting? Feel free to conclude why one type of ranting is better or more/less effective.
