Christie in Toms River: 'We Have to Take a Moment to Give Thanks'

Governor at Lowe's store where meals are being given out to families

Gov. Christie visited the Lowe's Home Improvement store in Toms River Wednesday morning, kicking off the state's "Season of Service" campaign in one of the communities most affected by Superstorm Sandy.

Christie joined local officials, including Rep. Jon Runyan (R-3), and Lowe's executives at the Hooper Avenue store, where employees were helping distribute enough Thanksgiving meals to feed 3,000 people.

The Season of Service is a volunteer initiative encouraged by the Christie administration, aimed at encouraging the end of the year as a time to give back.

The meals, provided by Boston Market, came in the form of 500 bags enough to feed six people each.

"We want to be here and see people on this holiday," said Christie. "It's important for everyone tomorrow to take a deep breath and remember all the loss that has impacted this state, but we have to take a moment and give thanks."

The governor said he'll spend Thanksgiving at his home in Mendham with 16 guests, but acknowledged some New Jersey residents won't be able to spend the day in their own homes.

"Wherever your home is tomorrow, be with your families," he said. "I thank God for the minimal loss of life due to this storm."

Lowes officials on hand said they wanted to open up their stores for the meal distribution after realizing so many of their own employees had been affected by Sandy. Some of those employees were helping with the efforts Wednesday morning.

A large crowd of people had already gathered at the store by the time Christie arrived.

The governor was joined by First Lady Mary Pat Christie, Runyan, township officials as well as former New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia Flyers player Jim Dowd, himself a local resident who has lived in Brick and Point Pleasant Borough.

Rick - I was referring to the poster having his "stomach turn" over the fact that anyone could conceivably be "sorry that million dollar homes were lost in Bayhead." I don't know of many folks who would not be empathetic to the loss of a home period (pardon the pun). It's a twisted envious way to go through life.

What's your point? The public education system is a scam. The individuals running and working in the system are scams too. They know exactly what is happening. Christie needs to reform and change the educational system. Don't believe those who run and work in the schools. Listen to all the students who graduated and now realize that the school they went to really was just one big lie.

Yes Frank, I am aware that people are hurting. In reality this was a minor hurricane. Not to the people who were affected, but overall it was minor.
Perhaps you should look at the history of hurricanes in this country.
Look up the Hurricane of 1900 in Galveston, TX,
the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane, the 1919 Florida Keys Hurricane, the 1926 Miami hurricane or the 1938 New England hurricane. It cover an area from Maryland to Quebec. The surge from Long Island Sound travelled as for as Hartford CT and Springfield MA.
They all happened long before Al Gore was born and before someone started blaming hurricanes on global warming.
Even during the era known as the 'Little Ice Age' there was the Great Hurricane of 1780,

Deborah A. Mc Callum

Well said Frank, I couldn't agree with you more...! I've observed a lot of opinions from a distance in politics, etc., but the truth of the matter is this: "A divided country will never stand." It's time for people to put their differences aside and recognize the wisdom behind that. Progress will never be achieved if a united front towards supporting President Obama fails to realize itself. In regards to climate change: Al Gore was dead on in his environmental assessments/warnings on a global level. It has come to the point in time where the term, 'natural disasters' will have to be redefined and categorized in a more appropriate context. The only Conspiracy Theories being fabricated out there are by the masses who choose to hide their heads in the sand, and deny any responsibility, or course of action. A cynical attitude is usually based on a self-serving lack of interest to educate the mind, by diverting attention elsewhere, upholding dissent and skepticism. "Playing the Devil's Advocate."

Gore left office as VP with a net worth of less than 2 million. He is now worth about 100 million, mostly by hyping his global warming theory.

Yes, global warming theory. Two years ago we had several severe blizzards and extremely cold weather which were blamed on global warming.

Ha Ha...! "Keep those bizarro world science facts coming our way." There's a world of difference between drawing conclusions from historical facts, and making inaccurate correlations to scientific research of our day and age. The confusion lies in not grasping that the speed, frequency and intensity of natural disasters are increasing by higher percentages, than ever before recorded in history. We have the technology and education to evaluate the impact of human activity on the environment, ranging back more than just a few, selective decades. Anyone can spin-off dates in history with actual facts, measuring relevant information as valid comparisons, but it still does not explain the greater frequency and higher percentages of these occurrences...!!??

As I said it was not minor to the people who were affected, but overall it was minor.
The Galveston hurricane killed over 8000 people just in the Galveston area.
In 1989 Hurricane Hugo created a surge over 10 feet high that traveled 15 miles inland from the bay in some parts of South Carolina. If that happened here it would go past Lakehurst.

@Rick TRENTON, NJ — Weekday PATH service to Lower Manhattan along the World Trade Center line will resume early Monday.

Officials say those trains will run from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., with stops in New Jersey at Newark, Harrison, Journal Square, Grove Street and Exchange Place and in New York at the World Trade Center.

Disabled access will be available at Newark and World Trade Center.

Floodwater spawned by Superstorm Sandy inundated the World Trade Center station, covering its track bed with several feet of water. Port Authority PATH crews have since removed millions of gallons of water from the tracks and platforms and repaired or replaced damaged switching and signal systems.

The line will not operate on weekends, so crews can continue their repair work

Despite all the focus on candidates courting Hispanics or the working class, men are the nation's ultimate swing voters; they're why Republican George W. Bush became president and Republican John McCain didn't. Maybe it's time to pause and consider the fickle male. Perhaps presidential hopefuls staring into the gender gap in 2016 should look beyond the usual controversies over "women's issues" and instead ask, "What do men want?"
