FEMA Center Opening In Brick; Christie To Be There

Governor will appear at FEMA site Friday afternoon

Gov. Chris Christie will appear in Brick Friday afternoon to help open a FEMA Storm Relief Center at Drum Point Elementary school.

The event will take place at 3 p.m.

The FEMA site is minutes away from some of the township neighborhoods hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy, including the Shore Acres, Cherry Quay and Baywood sections.

Prior to the Brick appearance, Christie will tour storm-damaged neighborhoods throughout Ocean County.

Can you verify if non-union utility workers (volunteers from right-to-work states) are being turned away by the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Utility Workers) and preventing the restoration of utility services in the storm damaged areas ?

The Township between all of their agencies has done a very good job of keeping people informed between hotlines, the Facebook page, websites and radio. As for electric, the Township doesn't control the power companies so they obviously can't tell you when.
The many facets of 'the town' have done an amazeing job. It's day 2 1/2 since the biggest and most devastating storm we've faced arguably since the early 60's and there is already major progress being made. We have National Guard, Police, Fire, EMS, Utilities and other volunteers working diligently around the clock!! Something like this doesn't 'just get fixed' over night. People where told to prepare for a whole week before this hit.
Brick and other agencies around the State are doing an outstanding job. Obviously people will get frustrated and angry as is human nature, but a great job in the wake of such a tragedy is occuring.

Dennis - The township has done checks in neighborhoods affected by the storm, including the barrier island where two teams went on foot to rescue people. As for utilities, the township has no control over when your electricity will return nor are they given schedules by JCP&L. The BTMUA has maintained water/sewer throughout the week without interruption as has NJ Natural Gas (for the mainland).

bull, I find it hard to believe New Jersey has all the workers needed, union propaganda -
"That's a rumor," he said. "We are starting work this morning with Long Island Power Authority. We were headed to a New Jersey utility but they had all the crews they could handle."

Sara ..
I hope you're including yourself in the category of "mis-informed" or perhaps "in denial"... check out the following link to an Alabama TV news video reporting on this issue....

Isn't it amazing how the Internet provides the "transparency" that politicians promised but failed to deliver ??

That would NEVER happen. Looters and people who start these rumors to create anger and hysteria are the lowest forms of life.

They are NOT accepting help from NON union workers , its a fact ! You wont hear that on the main stream news channels either ! BUT it IS TRUE ! And why are there NO military TANK TRUCKS set up already in all these gas stations, FILLING up peoples cars and gas cans ( for free) !!????? There is NO GAS being pumped into these gas staions because they do not have generators ! Why on earth dont they ? In florida it is mandated that every gas station MUST have generators to FILL their tanks when the tanker trucks come to fill the in ground tanks . With no electric they simply cannot fill the inground tanks ! IF every gas station was mandated to carry generators this would NOT be happening now with NO gas available ! Such a disgrace that these politicians in Trenton get away with this.. when they are braging themselves up in Trenton that they are there for YOU ! They are there for themselves ! Time to change Trenton too ! How dare ANY volunteer worker come to the state of NY or NY now in this disaster and be turned away !? I hope everyone reading this thinks long and hard about what their state needs in the future to help THEM in these times, and what politicians are not doing their jobs when it comes to the health and safety of the people. THIS is a prime example they are NOT !!! I pray this is over very soon and people get their lives back quickly. God bless and help every family !

Sorry Fran, but your comment has a serious mistake. Tanker trucks fill the underground station tanks from their onboard pumps, no electrical connection from the station is needed. Ever see a home heating oil delivery? Same situation.
The station generators are needed to pump the gas UP to the customers in a blackout situation. So it is possible for an unpowered station to get gas delivered and then distribute it when power is restored.
I agree than having the gas right there but tantalizing unavailable is an unacceptable situation, but at least we don't have to wait for a delivery to be made until after power is restored.

REALLY!!!! Are you serious...I travel every day out 195 and 295 and in the last 2 days I have seen more gas fuel trucks then I have in the past year traveling. Need I not mention that Florida is more prone to hurricanes then NJ. It's such a shame to hear such a A...hole remark from a trailor trash moron like your self while I am scrabmbling to get gas to keep my car fueled up to go to work and the generator to keep my family warm at a temperature of maximum 64 while you post this BS post. Time to change Trenton?...I've seen more action with the Governor and President in this hurricane then I saw in Bush in 3 months....I voted for Bush too!!!

Tanks are filled by gravity there is no pump on the tanker. The reason the story was not reported in main stream media is that it never happened the so called document came fom the Alabama utilities and Mr. Hardin was confused. You can read about it in Bob Ingles Blog

Below is a quote from the Huntsville Al. article :
"It is not true for us," she said. "I don't know how we got lumped in there (in that report). We sent eight guys to Maryland, not New Jersey. They have been there since before the storm but they've finished work and are headed home this morning."

( Why couldn't Jersey have used them too ?)

New paper article quote:

Because of the storm and snow, it took two days for his crews to arrive in New Jersey, where they learned they were not needed. ( NOT NEEDED ??????????)

Plus how many OTHER power and light companies from other states WILLING to HELP that were not allowed to work as they were non union. and turned away ??? Im not talking about Maryland here, I'm talking NJ. There are situations going on now where some utility comp. drove to Jersey to be turned away as we see in the article, being told they were NOT NEEDED ???? Are you kidding me ??? Who would tell them that ?? I would say every crew would be needed union or non union. I know not every utility company runs the same equipment, or knows how every other states electric systems work, etc, granted, but to be turned away saying told they are not needed ??? Told they don't need the help when thousands are still without power,, doesn't sound like they have enough help to me ! He is right when he stated they have to work through TRADE ASSOCIATIONS alright !

Once again on my way to work this morning I saw in no consecutive order in the range of 25 power utility trucks from all different states on there way east bound to the jersey shore with telephone poles...they ranged from VA to FLA. I also viewed fuel tanker trucks coming from Baltimore....oh yeah, maybe they were being turned around at the turnpike ......not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that electric is needed to run the pumps, ( but now, not after power is restored) and the generators I think would make the pumps work. Im not an expert by any means, here, but I do know that military tankers could be sent to be based in these gas stations, parking lots, ,municipalities etc, and pump gas directly into cars, trucks and gas cans. Its done all the time in disaster situations, why arent they there right now ??? Thats my point here, along with excepting every volunteer utility worker who comes to this state to work, union or non union. I do not feel NJ is getting all the help and assistance for its famlies that it could be getting. My opinion .

Free gas?! Seriously. Charging for it has created near bloodshed in some cases, imagine if they were giving it away. Don't compare NJ to florida with repect to hurricane preparedness. That's like blaming them for not having more snowplows. Pull it togerher folks.

nj.com
Major utility companies in New Jersey said that they are welcoming any and all out-of-state crews helping to restore power, and have not refused any non-union contractors.

At least one media report out of Alabama claims that personnel from that state were turned away in Seaside Heights because they were not affiliated with a union.

“We take crews as they become available,” said Ron Morano, a spokesman for Jersey Central Power & Light. “Everyone understands this is an all-hands-on-deck event.”

He said crews from throughout the nation were now working in JCP&L’s service area, including from California, Idaho, Kentucky, Florida, Michigan and North Carolina.

He did suggest that municipal companies might have issues working side-by-side with non-unionized contractors.

“We did not turn any crews away,” he said.

A Public Service Electric & Gas spokeswoman also said the extent of damage from Monday’s superstorm called for as much manpower as could get here.

“We have not turned any mutual-aid crews away,” Deann Muzikar said. “We’re taking any help we can possibly get.”

As of Wednesday, about 1,050 out-of-state contractors were working in PSE&G’s service area, she said, including from utility companies in Canada, Texas, Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Pennsylvania and other states.

Any worker that has a problem working side-by-side should be fired in a emergency like this or without an emergency. Unions suck !!

Mandating that gas stations are equipt with something as simple as generators in my opinion is not comparing to having or not having snow plows. I do not live in Florida, born and raised in Jersey. It's simply a matter of being "prepared" in any emergency situation. I'm not exactly sure how generators help in getting the gas pumped into cars, but they do. Its a basic, but very warranted entity.

During the news conference, Governor Christie was asked about the rumors that non-union utility workers were turned away. He stated that it was indeed a rumor, that workers from Alabama stopped in Virginia and called and were given bad information, and that information was then transmitted as fact. The workers, in his words, "never even made it here". He stated that no one offering assistance in this emergency will be turned away for any reason, and especially not for that reason. He further stated that he received assurances from the union as well as from all of the utilities that this was not the case, and that if he were to find out that it was the case, he would invoke his powers under the Disaster Recovery Act to stop it.

Hopefully a transcript of the speech will be released so that these rumors can be put to rest.

Sadly people won't care about the truth. Fran and others want to believe the worst, it's just the kind of people they are.

If you are looking to volunteer, Presbyterian church on drum point rd can use some also visitation church on Mantoloking rd. My mother and I are going to be at visitation church all day tomorrow helping hand out food and sort donations. It's going to be a long clean up and any little bit of your time can help.
