Chick-Fil-A Gets Approval to Build in Brick

Odor issue was last concern before construction could begin

The Brick Township Planning Board quickly resolved the last remaining issue before Chick-Fil-A would be allowed to begin building its location in the township.

The fast food chain has been long seeking to build a location at 520 Route 70, adjacent to the Lowe's Home Improvement store. The board approved the restaurant's construction in late 2011 but the chain's representatives were required to come in one last time for a discussion on the building's odor control, as required in a resolution approving its construction.

"Chick-Fil-A has about 1,700 restaurants, and none of them have ever had a problem with odor," said Timothy M. Prime, a Mount Laurel-based attorney who represented the restaurant chain before the board.

Prime said the restaurant's kitchen would include hoods over its equipment with state of the art filters. He also said there would be no open flame cooking which would produce exhaust smoke.

"We don't believe it will be a problem," said Prime, who warned further delays could jeopardize the project.

"If this store is not under construction soon, it's not going to make it on this year's build list, and we don't know what would happen after that," he said.

Board attorney Joseph Coronato suggested the board grant the chain administrative approval to begin construction, but stipulate that if there are any odor issues, the board would reserve the right to enforce further regulations.

"At some point of time if there is an odor, the applicant would have to come back within 30 days to address the issue," said Coronato.

The board, after Prime's assurance and advice from Coronato, unanimously approved the project.

There's actually a Brick planning board? I thought all you had to do was show up at town hall with a check and they let you build whatever you want wherever. That's the only way to explain the cluster-f*** that is the center of this town.

It's pretty funny that Brick TWP would have a problem with sweet smell of chicken.. I've been complaining about a dumpster behind my house for 5 years and they've done nothing about it.. Just a warning, I will be retaining a lawyer for this problem this year. Maybe you can have them build their restaurant behind my house instead.. I would rather smell fried chicken than hot garbage.. Putzes...

Like I've stated, I've lived here all my life so I kind of know where sayings about Brick came from, people in towns such as Sea Girt, Manasquan and Point Beach have called Brick, Bricktucky for as long as I can remember. One of my friends was dating a girl from Manasquan and I actually heard her sister say to her. "Your not going out with that boy from Bricktucky are you? Daddy will kill you!" Now a guy from Bricktucky was a hero to his pals if he scored with a Squan Rich Bitch. It's a thing that's been going on for decades and that kiddies ends tonights lesson of Ocean County History.

again as I stated earlier Im not from NJ & not a native of Brick BUT I do remember at my 1st job here some schmuck form North Jersey referring to the area as the "sticks' BUT again lets not let FACST like the Brick/TR area (76,000 & 86,000 per 2000 census) has the 5th highest combined pop in NJ But since its not all concentrated on 8 city blocks of hell its the sticks....Just for a reference the town I was born & raised in had just lost its official " small town" designation (over 15k people per 2000 census) just before I moved here & the areas in NC & SC most of the people are fleeing too are much smaller than Brick. So its just ignorance of the so called elitists (aka rich biatch & eggheads) calling Brick bricktuckey Brick is mostly a blue-collar working mans town. Now as for the complaints about the chains vs local establishments there are good & bad in both some local places peep rave about I have been under impressed & disappointed in. Thanks for the story. I had no idea this was being planned but it sounds like great news. Always nice to have more options. I have one question though. Where exactly will it be built? Lowes doesn't face the street and there is the Bank of America ATM there - will it be next to the ATM?

Also, what is being built across the street next to Houlihan's?

Thanks.

being around in all my years personally think is over building.. they need to think about the well being of the community... Building MORE is not the answer.
and a second note.... having grandchildren in brick the term Bricktucky seems to be from people that are making fun of your town.. ( TRUE OR NOT) its a stereotype of saying that you are all " rednecks" with bad teeth that are racist, and all inbreed.. SO IF you think its true & want people to think of you that way & that you have " Pride & tradition" in that ,maybe you are not offended by that term... I know my young adult & teenage grandchildren DO NOT like that, as many of their friends

Chick-fil-A requires an initial financial commitment of $5,000 from franchisees, who are chosen based on how they fit with the moral, ethical and religious beliefs of the company's owners? Getting approval to open a Chick-fil-A depends largely on how well you conform to the ethos of the company. Our question is what kinda tax deal did they make?

Chick-fil-A's owners are devout Christians and expect all of their operators to share Christian values. Operators do not need to be Christian, but must be willing to close the restaurant on Sundays, espouse Christian values and be willing to participate in group prayers during training and management meetings. Is this structured like Scientology?

That's the majority of our name.

How many times have you had friends tell you or read posts on Facebook "going to breakfast at McDonalds" or "going to lunch at Wendy's" or "going to dinner at Buffalo Wild Wing" on maybe all in the same week? The entire Costco area is a traffic nightmare. Why don't these super franchises put their stores in Lakewood or Toms River or Wall? Why must every person from all the surrounding towns clog up our roads. Living is Brick and trying to accomplish every day tasks is nearly impossible. Brick township has become the commercial shopping center for Lakewood. Lakewood only builds high density housing and no commercial shopping. All of Lakewood has to drive through Brick to shop, clogging our roads.
Does anyone know who designed that Costco parking lot and entrance way? those engineers should be fired and the planning board members who approved it arrested.

It is often a matter of money, or fear of a failed location. The thing is the Township has no power to require a business to go into a existing store. Also the Township does not open these businesses, or decides what business should open. I would not want the Township to decide what the best businesses, best locations, or best use of a building is. That is for the market to decide. Do I think we need another fast food restaurant in Brick, No. But Chick-Fil-A does. I trust their judgement more then the municipal government. They are the ones taking the risk and investing the money to open the store. If it is a bad choice they will close. That is a free market.

The white castle washed away in the storm. :0(
Sorry to break it to you. It is not the place you remember any longer around here. We have tracking devices in our trash bins and cars, large oversized box chains landed on our town. There is one big ugly orange one right in the center. The government is basically broke because the politicians stole with two hands and four pockets. The mom and pop stores and restaurants have mostly all closed. Half the town is for sale or rent and Lakewood is just poised to buy it up so they can have their empire. Windward Beach is replete with felled trees, The Foodtown Lot is a garbage dump our library was redone taking out the grand staircase and cameras monitor our every move at traffic intersections. But look at the bright side we still have the dollar store, since we lost 12 percent of our tax base the taxes will be going up, as will your home and flood insurances. The services the town used to provide have all been cut, cut, cut. If you still want to move back please let me know as I hear tell you can't sell a house. I haven't even tried and am looking to bale. Not the town I used to know here any longer.

Nope! That's how the traffic lights control options like left turn lanes, instead of sensors buried under the roadway. Much easier to repair/replace in the event of a malfunction.
Who care where you make a turn? Sound a bit PARANOID to me...

If you don't have a tinfoil hat yet, here's more fodder for you....
If you have a smart phone, the gov't can know where you are as long as the battery in it is working, if they really cared to, but the likelihood is extremely low. Same deal with EZ Pass .
The cops video scan parked cars' license plates for suspected violators in major cities.
Anything you buy with a credit card , or whenever you use a grocery store customer card for discounts, or most of the things you do online are recorded , There are 6 trackers on this website alone : adtech, advertising.com, chartbeat, facebook connect, new relic, and twitter button. Check for yourself with Ghostery or another tracker blocker.
Lots of personal intrusion out there, the camera-like devices at traffic lights isn't one of them.

This is from twp website. They just decide if the application meets the master plan. Not if it is a good idea as a business decision. The correct parking, traffic flow, set backs and in the correct zone and it is approved.

Bricktucky is an expression for a single demographic slice of our community. It is easier for some to stereotype the entire town as undereducated, culturally backward, country bumpkins. Of course this is far from the truth. The people of Brick are a much more diverse demographic. I have seen similar attitudes over my 55 years in Brick. In my youth we people who moved to Brick from North Jersey viewed the Pineys this way. This was wrong and I have grown up. For those who repeatedly like to slur their own town let me just say it reflects more on those hurling the insult than on the intended recipients. As for another fast food chicken joint, let the people vote with their feet and their dollars.

Yep, we're ok in Brick. Anybody remember that little documentary about 40 years ago?
Showed a brick family sitting at the kitchen table all drinking bottles of beer,
People were in an uproar about it. LOL!

Chick-Fil-A, Brick-Fil-A .... Who cares???
After Flooding THREE Times on my block in less than 30 days here in Brick, I also reject the term 'Bricktucky'. I submit we are now "Brickissippi". Minnows in our bread draws and periscopes on our cars. And with all the chemical pollution in the flood waters, maybe we won't have to raise our houses. We will adapt, and grow Gills!

When they built Lowes it was approved thet there could be a freestanding store on the property. It just took a long time to have some one intrested in it. All towns chase the tax dollar, if not Brick they would be somewhere close. The stores want to be here becuase Brick is a cross road town. Next to Monmouth county high end towns where they cant build, highway access, parkway access to the barrier islands ( and they will get rebuilt, it's just a matter of time) and close to the more rural ocean county towns. I still remember WoodHaven Lumber where Target is, The Rickel store and the bad condition of Brick Plaza. I do miss the Plaza Grill that was on the backside of Brick Plaza, where Mel's was. I see they finally took down the signs for Mel's since they havent been open for a year. What did happen to them anyway ?? Brick is not a small town anymore, population of 85,000 is large and with comes the stores.
