Catholic Schools Week Celebrations Begin Monday

Events to be held throughout Monmouth and Ocean

Catholic elementary and high schools across the country will be recognized as part of Catholic Schools Week and several local groups will be taking part in their own activities.

The theme for this year is "Catholic Schools Raise the Standards," according to a press release from the Diocese of Trenton. The goal of Catholic Schools Week is to "promote the academic excellence and Catholic identity of Catholic schools in the US," the release added.

St. Dominic School on Old Squan Road in Brick is the township's sole Catholic school, though Brick students are well represented at Catholic schools in neighboring towns - especially St. Rose High School in Belmar and Monsignor Donovan High School in Toms River.

George V. Corwell, the Director of the Office of Education for the New Jersey Catholic Conference said he was glad that a proclamation from Gov. Chris Christie recognized the importance of the week.

"The Catholic Schools of New Jersey represent an investment in New Jersey's future, and the sacrifices made by Catholic school parents save the state's overburdened public school system (and local tax payers) over $1.3 billion annually.

The annual event is sponsored by the National Catholic Education Association and is usually celebrated with masses, open houses and community events. More information can be found on the association's website.

Catholic school system, what a racket... Pay high tuition so the fear of a phony god will be put into your child's brain all while being beaten by psychotic nuns and pedophile prone priests keep a close eye on them. These schools are also tax exempt which is absolutely mind boggling to me. Religion is the work and invention of humans, I don't get why these private worship based schools are excluded from taxes, it's a business.

I don't understand how any adult can believe that Mary was impregnated by a ghost, it's 2013 people... be rational. and I could go on all day with the religious fairytales that adults believe.

So sad when people don't have faith, your a example of the sadness, anger, feeling of loneliness & lack of moral & respect to other people show threw... Its OK people of faith will pray for you, & God Will forgive you, Just ask & open your heart...
amazing things will happen if you would just let go of all the hate in your heart God is waiting for you to accept him, He has already accepted you

@militant....It appears Your mother was impregnated by Satan. I have read many of your postings and they all have one common denominator. Your hatred of religion. Why? Where you molested or abused as a child? Are you Gay? Are you a public school teacher? You are free to practice and believe in whatever it is you like, but please don't mock or denigrate others who disagree with you. Catholic schools give superior education and are the best alternative to the failing public schools. As for pedophile priests, there are many, many more pedophile public school teachers and coaches then there are priests, and the vast majority of Catholic schools do not have any nuns teaching.

Where was your god when all the good things happened to those kids at school in Connecticut? They were all atheist and so were their parents I guess? Religion is for the insane, I'm a realist.... and I'm not the slightest bit angry by the way....

Why did your god make me an atheist?

@militant....Those are all very good and reasonable questions you ask. I have asked them many times myself. Maybe the deranged shooter at Sandy hook was a militant anti-theist and he wanted to kill innocent people to "prove" there is no God. We will never know. People who believe in God, or any deity, higher power or religion, have to have Faith. That is what guides them through their lives. When religous faith helps others and is used for good, it is wonderful, when it is used for evil and hurts others it is horrible. When scientists can prove the beginning of the universe and how it began, then I will believe them. Until then, I will believe in a higher being. God. And please don't tell me a random "Big Bang" started the universe. There is no proof of that. And if there was a Big Bang explosion, where did the gases come from and why dd they explode? Where they just there floating around in "space"? Floating around where? There wasn't any universe until the big bang so where wee these gases floating around?

@slipperyslope.... In regards to proof, you contradict yourself by saying you believe in god because the Big Bang or how we got here cant be proven. One could argue the complete opposite (god can't be proven and believe in the big bang) and you would have no leg to stand on for your reasoning in why you choose god. The g in god is always in lower case on purpose if you're wondering....

If an eight foot pink bunny ran through my bedroom last night, do I have to prove it to you or do you just believe me?
