Budget, Ordinances on Council Meeting Agenda

Mayor to present controversial budget Tuesday night

Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis is scheduled to present his administration's 2012 township operating budget at a council caucus meeting Tuesday night.

The Republican mayor will face a council with a Democratic majority to present his spending plan, which will include the layoffs of 77 township employees in the public works department.

The mayor has told Brick Patch that laying off the employees, and replacing them with private contractors, will save taxpayers money.

Last year, the proposed budget included $8.6 million in above-cap spending, and necessitated a public referendum in order to maintain public services. Much of that spending is presumably rolled back in the budget to be presented Tuesday night.

In addition to the budget presentation, the council will preview its regular meeting set for Feb. 28, which will include votes on a mayoral salary ordinance, changes to the peddling and taxicab ordinances, and the condemnation or acquisition of a small lot on Lake Riviera to accommodate a portion of a dam the township was ordered by the state to replace.

Is the Mayor hiring his own bodyguards or using the township police that we pay for? Tonight's meeting is gonna get ugly, a perfect example of politics at its worst. What a shame...

Lori- remember back in the beginning of the year when a certain few people were stepped on, yelled at and a few other things that I can't remember off the top of my head. I think since then they were looking to have police at the meetings. so now its everyone and not just a certain few. I sure hope though that everyone is respected but able to tell their concern about the issue at hand.

How about going to a four day work week for all employees, with staggered shifts so that services continue, albeit at reduced levels, five days a week until we get our fiscal house back in order. Let's get our money back out of the Food Town site. That's been in motion far too long! Why is the burden being placed only on Public Works, especially when over half the electorate voted to keep their services? Freeze salaries and cut some of the high paid salaries, like Juan Ballou. We are in tough times, and ALL need to share the burden! How about some LEADERSHIP, Mr. Mayor!

Sorry guys? Everyone is mad at this guy because he lied to us. Told us that we needed to increase the budget to save the PWD/PD. Told us that private would cost the tax payers twice what their paying already. Now hes saying its cheaper and we dont need these guys anymore. Where did all this money go? Why is everyone paying more in taxes? How come the PD did get downsized at all? Their the biggest money dump in Brick. My guess they needed the money to pay all our police officers their already over sized salaries. So they can support all these bars and liquor stores that keep popping up. Brick is a joke of a town.

We only voted to keep the DPW for a year. Something they don't want people to be aware of. A budget is only good for a year and then everything is up for negotiation again the following year. Why? Because they factor inflation, salary increases, and benefit increases into each budget each year.

Ugh! I knew this was going to happen!!! People are just SOOO uninformed.

CShorShell - That is not correct. Their declaration to the taxpayer was that they needed the increase over the 2% cap to keep the DPW and not to lay off 20+ PD. Their direct quote was "We should be good for 4-5 years"

Your living in a fantasy world. At first it will look like privatizing our waste pickup looks cheaper, down the road watch out. Then will come other services that they want to privatize, more money out of your pocket, then you will find your taxes either staying the same or being raised while paying out of pocket for services the taxes used to pay for. Move to Wall Twp and get to know what good is, you'll be back in Brick before long, but only if we don't follow in Wall Twp's foot steps.

Agreed!!! When we had that microburst storm last summer, I was told by DPW that the debris (other than tree limbs) were considered construction debris & I would have to pay extra to have it picked up...REALLY!!!!! It was storm debris. That is why I should favor DPW over private pick??? Explain that Minimew!!

Tired of BS, I will start by saying you are full of BS!!! DPW doesn't collet fees for picking up ANYTHING. THERE IS NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE!!!!! Either they pick it up or they don't. Within the first few weeks of the storm they were picking up pretty much ALL debris caused by the storm including fencing, how do I know this?? I had fencing destroyed by that same microburst. If someone from the DPW told you "you would have to pay extra" you should have gotten their name and had them FIRED because what they supposedly did is illegal. So in closing to you Tired of BS, I don'y buy the crap you are trying to sell here. You wan to try to discredit the DPW, try harder and try to figure out a plausable sceniro

@ minimew....OUCH, who peed in your coffee?? They most certainly did. Four workers stood at the end of my driveway and said there was a fee. I did call DPW and got nothing but a run-a-round. Our neighbors & I ended up burning all the debris in our backyard fire-pits, including the remaining trees that they would not come back to pick up. I'm not saying they didn't remove most of the tree limbs, but they most definitely did not pick up anything other tree limbs in my neighbor. What makes you think that a mere taxpaying resident can get an union worker fired any way?

Call and tell them you are from a town that doesn't have public pickup and that number will be cut in half.
The reason you were quoted so high is because they would have to send a truck for 1 or 2 stops. When the whole town privatizes the price will magically go down as companies vie for our business.

Oscar actually BRICK PD works all the Public council and planning board meetings. Tonights meeting is actually a caucus meeting, which Brick PD in most cases does not work. Although the caucus meetings are open to the public, they typically do not attend. However, tonight's meeting is expected to bring a very large crowd.

If we do in fact eliminate public works and go to private pick up, will it become our responsibility to find our own service, or will the Township make the choice for us? If that is the case, then our taxes will still be paying for the service that does not fall under the 2 percent cap. The more I think about this latest stunt, is it possible that our Mayor is doing this to flex his political muscles and showing the council and reminding the citizens that he is still in control and will get his way?

Well certainly less folks then were expected. Talk about squirm. The mayor presented his budget and a screen with his calculations and facts concerning how he arrived at his decision and then "walked out" of the meeting not to return. We later learned from the new council more news about the timing of their getting the new budget which they just received before the meeting. No time to even guess what was in it. I gave the Mayor more credit than that, but guess I was totally wrong. Shame on you Mr. Mayor. Yes to the new council. they talked to us like we mattered and so did the PW employees matter. Which was so great to hear. Maybe theres hope yet.

The benefits of private pick up I have witnessed first hand when living up in Northern NJ. We had 3 companies to choose from and pick the best price or plan. We then had separate colored garbage bags for each provider. This bag idea kept costs lower for single's and seniors because they produce less trash than a family of 4 plus. The bags were left at the side of our homes not in the street so the streets were kept free for cars. Brick with it's numerous Snow Birds (lucky ducks) and it highly taxed summer beach residents would see a great savings. This seems to be a fair option since many of them pay in excess of 100K in property tax and still have no voting rights in Brick. The privatization will reduce costs but the jobs lost would have to be address possibly in a rehire arrangement with the private carriers as a criteria to getting a permit to operate in town. Just My two cents!

I would urge members of the Council to maintain the Department of Public Works from elimination. The Department serves a multitude of purposes and other cost saving initiatives should be taken before implementing Draconian Measures which once done can't be readily restored. Our employees' contributions to our Township are significant, and they enhance our quality of life here in Brick Township.

Consider analysis of overtime cost within the Department and in All Departments. Eliminate overtime cost by eliminating garbage or recycling pick up on Holidays. Do away with the "Get Up and Go" program and utilize that man power to assist with Signs or in other areas.

Reduce and/or eliminate associated OVERTIME costs within all Departments. Over time expenditures should have to be analyzed in a meaningful way. To-date overtime expenditures remain unchecked, Department Heads need to share in the sacrifice. In an effort to save funds, I asked a Dept. Head to consider relinquishing his taxpayer paid vehicle. He laughed and declined to give up his vehicle.

I suspect that should overtime expenditures and approval of same be DISCUSSED at the Council Meetings, much needed accountability would be achieved and tax dollars would be saved.
