Brick Woman Dies in Herbertsville Road Crash

Police seeking witnesses to Tuesday night accident

A 65-year-old Brick woman died Tuesday night in a head-on collision after another driver crossed a double-yellow line, police said.

Susan Steeper was driving northbound on Herbertsville Road in her 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis when a 2008 Hyundai Sonata, driven by Deborah Tadych, 60, of Brick, crossed the double-yellow line in the center of the roadway while driving in the opposite direction, said Brick Police Traffic Safety Officer Scott Dierking.

Tadych's vehicle hit Steeper's head-on about 300 feet south of Sawmill Road, Dierking said. The accident occurred at approximately 6:37 p.m.

Steeper had to be extricated from her vehicle by members of the Herbertsville Fire Department. She was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, where she later succumbed to internal injuries, Dieking said.

Tadych was taken to Ocean Medical Center with a fractured hip.

Brick Police Officer James Kelly and Sgt. Lawrence Petrola were the first responding officers. Brick Police EMS, Volunteer EMS and MONOC paramedics also responded.

Officer Jay Lampiasi and Dierking, both of the traffic safety unit, are investigating, assisted by Detective Alley of the Ocean County Prosecutors Office. Witnesses to the crash are being asked to call the traffic safety unit at 732-262-1140.

Condolences to all involved. I can't help but feel this begs the question about driving at night. As drivers age their depth perception can become impaired. I think it is an issue that bears some consideration that for safety sake older drivers should consider hanging up the keys when it is dark. Our roads have become increasingly congested and it can be a bad mix with the dark of winter.

The drivers involved were only 60 and 65. Surely, you're not suggesting that this is `too old` to drive a car. Plus, it would be irresponsible to speculate how and why this happened until more information comes to light. My condolences go out to the family and friends of Ms. Steeper.

A few years ago, a person hit my car in the identical fashion at the exact same location as this accident. The woman was in her 30s.

The driver who crossed over is 60. How is that an "older driver " who should give up keys?
