Brick Woman, 29, Killed After Being Struck by Car
Pedestrian crossed intersection against traffic light, police say
A 29-year-old woman was killed late Thursday night after police say she tried to cross a busy intersection against a traffic light.
Laura L. Voll, a Brick resident, died after being struck by a 2005 Chevrolet Aveo being driven by Kelly E. George, 21, of Point Pleasant, at 11:36 p.m. Thursday night.
Voll attempted to cross the intersection of Brick Boulevard and Molly Lane against the traffic light and outside of the marked crosswalk, according to a statement by Brick Police Sgt. David Bedrosian.
George was traveling southbound on Brick Boulevard and had the right of way when Voll was attempting to cross the intersection from the area of the Bay Harbor Shopping Center, the northeast corner of the intersection, Bedrosian said.
George's vehicle struck Voll about 30 feet south of the marked crosswalk, Bedrosian said, and the impact sent her 100 feet further south. She landed in the third travel lane of Brick Boulevard.
George then pulled over the Chevrolet and eventually pulled into the Yorktown Plaza shopping center.
Voll was transported to Ocean Medical Center while CPR was being administered, but succumbed to her injuries after arriving at the hospital.
Bedrosian and Officer Jay Lampiasi of the Brick Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit responded and are conducting the crash investigation. The Ocean County Sheriff’s Department’s Criminal Investigation Unit responded to the scene as well.
The roadway was shut down for approximately two hours as the investigation took place, police said.
In addition to township police, Brick Police EMS, MONOC paramedics and the Breton Woods fire company responded to the scene. Brick police officers Ryan Talty and James Iannarone were the first arriving units on the scene.
Anyone with information surrounding the crash is asked to contact the traffic safety unit at 732-262-1140.

This is a reply to John Glynn. Kelly George was speeding and had no skid marks and parked her car in a shopping center. THen she WALKED back to the scene on her PHONE and never even approached Laura to see if she could help. NOW let's tell the truth... There were two witnesses in two separate cars that told the Brick police officers that Kelly George WAS speeding through a light that JUST turned green! Both witnesses ran to Laura's side and were devastated and traumatized by this scene. I cannot believe no summons was given. YOU are blaming Laura for walking against the traffic light that JUsT turned green but you should also think about the 21 year old, Kelly George, that should of not of been speeding.

Actually Rockthis, it's not Brick or the residents of Brick 's fault. You can pretty much chalk it up to people being in the road when and where they shouldn't be.

Unfortunately more tragedies like this will happen if people do not cross the busy roads at the intersections. There is a young lady who lost her life and another who has to live with this the rest of her life. So sad for all families involved.

With the new law of Pedestrian's Right of Way, so many of the pedestrians think they should go at any time, regardless of a car being close. I have had many a heart attack when someone just jumps off the sidewalk to cross when they feel like it when I have the right of way. Common sense saves lives. Cars can't stop as quickly as people can. Very sad for both women.

Sally -- This has actually been something I've been looking into for a story. Anecdotally, ever since that law was passed I've had an uptick in my share of "close calls" as well, especially when driving near the beach in Point Pleasant, our barrier island or LBI.

Dan - Well I am glad to hear that I am not he only one that has noticed an increase in the very same issue since the "stop for pedestrians" law was passed. The law has taken all responsibility to "look both ways before crossing the street", (something everyone is taught at a very young age) from the pedestrian and placed all responsibility on the driver of the vehicle. Mind you the driver of the vehicle, is responsible for focusing on watching their speed, other vehicles, traffic lights, searching for that parking space in a shopping center, AND NOW we can include thinking for the pedestrian as well. Every time I go in and out of the Shop Rite I watch as people just walk right out into traffic and I can't help but think "are you stupid?" Every time I walk out of the store, I STOP at the curb, look both ways, and make sure I can go or that the driver of the car headed right for me is going to STOP. When driving on the road, we are all told "you need to drive defensively", so I apply the same rules when walking. I walk DEFENSIVELY. After all, it's takes far less thought/brain function for me to control my feet, than it does for me to control my vehicle.
Well, I wish you luck in writing about this issue and look forward to finding out what you learn.

We use to teach out kids to "Cross at the Green and NOT In Between", I'd venture to say that she was wearing black or a dark color at 11:39PM and the driver had no expectation that anyone would be crossing. Not know the intersection well enough to be ablke to find out what her Blood Alcohol Level was.

Driving in Brick Township is similar to the Wild West. In Brick, the amber light means speed up not slow down. Try to stay in the left turn lane at Brick Blvd and Drum Point Road stopped at a red light and you will feel the speed of the ongoing traffic. It's amazing. I have been in Brick for 10 years and have no fear of being caught for speeding as police are accustomed to speeders. Several key roads require speed bumps as was successfully done in the Lake Riviera section, however, try to get one and you will need to go through several gyrations and then someone will advise you they are not required. How else does a car flip over at Hooper Ave and Drum Point into the Walgreen's parking lot.It is almost physically impossible. Would love some feedback.

As far as Driving in Brick, this time of year is the worst bcz you have bennies that dont know where they are going, & Seniors that Dont know the rules of the road( Well they DO they just dont care) they have the " entilement" Watch out Im a senior & dont really care about anyone else... a merge to them means speed up cut someone off to do 10 miles under the speed limit, they DO NOT stop at stop sign & make illegal turns all over Brick, not to mention all the meds they are on most liky are under the influence . this are should be about the 2 people lives 1 lost & one change forever, But if you value your life, Stay out of shoprite Parking lot btwn 10-2 then Senior "hour" for shopping Fell So sad for the young lady 29 is Just way to young my heart goes to her & her family

Pedestrians, walkers and bike riders, need to follow the law. They do not always have the right of way. Look up jay walking. Walkers must walk on sidewalks and with the direction of traffic if on the roadway. Cross at the green, not in between and only in marked crosswalks at intersections. Bikes must folow all motor vehicle laws including stop signs, turn signals and direction of traffic.

This is a shame, pedestrians need to pay attention. I drive for a living, I watch these people cross the road with headphones on, head down texting, just jumping out btwn parked cars. I have almost been hit so many times b/c I see someone step off the curb & I have to jam my brakes (so I dont get a ticket, even though they are in the wrong) & they just stand there & look at me. I am in control of my truck, but it will not stop on a dime. I have seen a rise in this behavior since the stop for ped law. The pd's should start enforcing the crosswalks.

ok point taken hear what your sayin. have to have some common sense.. cant just walk out into traffic. I even tell my teenage sons that when they are riding bikes at dusk ( if they have dark clothing on) to put something light on that drivers can see yellow, white etc... they never think anything can happen. Sadly it does.

we were there a couple of minutes after the accident and honestly all I have to say is the following: #1 for "Not so Dumb" she was not wearing black. #2 for the defense of both it was 11:30pm or something like that it was very close to midnight. On Laura's defense who cares about the green light if the road is empty. For the driver who is going to be out at at midnight crossing Hooper Ave. #3 That's where the word ACCIDENT comes from. They were both at the wrong place and at the wrong time. Is different to write comments and pointing fingers to actually close to witness all this. Our condolences to both families.

Brittany, my sister was not doing 80. She never goes faster than 2-5 below the speed limit. She is a very consciencious and safe driver.
There were no skid marks because Laura came out of nowhere. Kelly did not see her.
She parked her car in the parking lot because she panicked and moved her car out of the way.
She walked back to Laura on the phone with 911. She did not actually approach her because I'm a nurse and have told her in the past to not move the victim in case of an accident. She ddnt say anything to her directly because she was in shock.
There was 1 witness. A retired state trooper who gave his statement to the police including the fact that the light HAD NOT just turned and Laura came out of nowhere.
Please don't speak of things unless you were there. My sister is devastated by this tragic accident and has to live with the images of last night forever. My whole family is in shock and mourning the passing of Laura right along with everyone. Though we cannot fathom the loss the Volls are feeling we do offer our condolences. Ashe, no one can be "charged" with a defemation claim like libel (not liable), as it is a civil wrong which would require suit. Slander is only an actual utterance and doesnt apply here. And it is in no way tampering or releasing investagtion information, as she is not a public official and is not sworn to with hold information from media venues. That being said, this is a terrible and tragic accident. One can point fingers all they want but in reality it is just that: an accident. JerseyGirl81, I was not vilifying your sister. I was replying to John Glynn who called Laura an idiot and stated that she caused damage to your sisters car. This was a tragic and traumatizing event for everyone involved. BUT the retired state trooper did state that your sister did swerve around him to go faster. My brother did see Laura walking across the high way, and in one second his life changed. My brother was the witness who FIRST ran to assist Laura. I do agree that your sister was in shock but once again I was replying to John Glynn who said Laura is an idiot and she had it coming to her because she was walking across a main street. Your sister, Kelly, and my brother have to live with these traumatizing images for the rest of their life. Pedestrians and drivers need to be considerate of each other at all times. If we lived in a perfect world, that's how it might be, perhaps. If only that were to be, accidents like this wouldn't happen.
I've had close calls when driving, and close calls when on foot. Not necessarily from being careless, either. There are places in Brick where I feel it is more dangerous (for pedestrians) to cross at the intersction then one or two hundred feet either way. If you think I'm wrong in stating that, come take a ride on the bus with me any weekday and I'll show you a prime example when we get off the bus on route 70 near Shoprite.
