Brick Township Priest Arrested, Charged With Sex Offenses
Priest at Church of the Visitation was arrested over the weekend for alleged incident Friday
A Brick Township priest has been charged with criminal sexual contact against a mother and her minor child, authorities announced Monday afternoon.
Fr. Marukudiyil C. Velan, 64, known to parishioners at Church of the Visitation as "Father Chris," was arrested Saturday by detectives from the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and Brick Township Police Department.
Earlier that day, township and county detectives interviewed a mother and her children – parishioners at the church – in connection with a report they had filed against Velan after he visited their home in Brick the day before, said Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford. During that visit, Ford said, it is alleged that Velan had "inappropriate contact" with the adult mother as well as her minor child.
Detectives conducted an investigation that concluded Velan befriended the family before his visit to their home. Ford said the investigation established probable cause to make the arrest.
The Diocese of Trenton, in a statement released Monday night, said Velan's full name is Velanmarukudiyil J. Christudas. He is a member of the Camaldolese Congregation of the Order of St. Benedict, and a native of India. Visitation Parish has been his only assignment in the Diocese, spokeswoman Rayanne Bennett said.
"Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M. has withdrawn Father Christudas’ faculties to minister in the Diocese of Trenton while the charges against him are being fully investigated and addressed by law enforcement authorities," Bennett said in a statement. "The Bishop has pledged the diocese’s full cooperation with this process."
Velan was charged with a single count of criminal sexual contact as to the adult victim, and one count of criminal sexual contact and one count of endangering the welfare of a child as to the minor victim, Ford said.
His bail was set at $75,000 cash by Superior Court Judge Francis Hodgson. Jail records showed he was being held in the Ocean County Jail Monday.
According to Ford, Velan had been assigned to the church on Mantoloking Road since 2001 as a visiting priest.
The investigation is ongoing, Ford said. Anyone with information regarding the investigation is being asked to contact Detective Anthony Paciulli of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-929-2027, or Capt. John Rein of the Brick Township Police Department at 732-262-2135.

I do not know this Priest but the story sounds alittle like a set up. Hope all the facts come out soon.. If he did molest these people, hang him, If not an innocent person may be wrongly accused. We should wait for the whole story. Most pedafiles strike more than once...there should be a history of this behavior. Innocent until proven guilty.

@brickmom, So, by your logic, if you or your family or any of your friends were not molested by a priest, you don't believe it happened? By the way, please learn to spell, it's "Priest" not "Preist", "Pervs" not "Prevs", and "Usually" not "Usally", also, learn to put together a coherent sentence with proper use of punctuation and capital letters.

Pedophiles and sexual deviants exist all around us, not just in the Catholic Church. The Church has always condemned illicit sexual behavior, unlike most of our society that condones and celebrates it. Let us concentrate on exposing and punishing this harmful behavior. Keep your children close, and raise them well. Let justice take it's course and presume this man is innocent until proven guilty.

Too many people are saying how they don't believe this could happen because they "know" this man. You can see someone every single day of your life, even LIVE with them, and still not "KNOW" what is truly going on in their minds. Antisocial people of any kind learn at an early age to keep their thoughts to themselves. Stop being so naive and wait until the facts come in before you stand up and claim to "know" anyone that you maybe see once a week for an hour or so!

1of2 I'm extremely disgusted & saddened about what I just read. My name is Adrienne & I'm a 31 year old resident. I've been a single mother of a beautiful & extremely talented 13year old daughter for the majority of her life. She attends Ccd classes at Church of the Visitation. My father, mother, aunts, uncles, cousins & my daughter and I are parishioners at this church since my family moved to Toms River in 1995. In 2003, tragedy struck my family with death of my cousin. Her parents are very active in the church. I was told of a certain priest & how he helped my aunt & uncle through this time of turmoil. I heard a few stories of him going out of his way to help ease their pain. In 2004, tragedy struck again. My mom had respiratory failure& was on life support@ Brick Hosp. I stayed@her bedside as much as I could but when I wasn't their was a certain priest who ( on his own time) sat &prayed by her side. The nurses told me he was a saint. My mom passed away 5/28/04@53yrs old. If it werent for 4 his words of comfort I wouldnt have made it through. Every Sunday since , my daughter& I go2mass. He stops the procession & "high-fives" my daughter or we make it a point to find him to speak with or simply give him a hug. Just being in his presence makes you feel better. He has a light that surrounds him. When

(part2of2) When I was married in 2005 I requested that I was married by him. Since he never performed a wedding in America before & his English is hard to understand , he was assisted by another priest. He sang at my wedding reception. I run into him from time to time at 7-11, where he gets his coffee and is social. The past 2years others have really flocked to Father Chris & look to greet him after church. He is super , super friendly. If u look sad he'll put his arm around shoulder as your walking & give you words of wisdom or pinch both of your cheeks and tell you to smile. Since, my daughter was 2 he'd make it a point to make her smile telling her about India. When other parishioners are taking pictures with him , he'll pull others in & laugh and say , " We are all Gods children." Many don't know but he's worked with Mother Theresa & the poor for many years. I hope & pray to God that this "misunderstanding" is resolved. I'm a very cautious person & can be rather standoffish due to a tragic life altering incident at age 12. Without hesitation I can say that This man is not an abuser, molester, raper. The furthest thing from it. He's just friendly& genuinely cares about others in their time of need & it makes me sad that this is what happens to those who help others. What is this world coming to?

Hope you believe in something greater than humans. There is a theology involved in any religion. Yes the messengers may fail in their example, but that doesn't diminish the message. You should wait until all the facts are made public before you jump to what could be a wrong conclusion about this priest. If he is in fact guilty, justice will be meted out, and his soul will burn for it. If he is found not guilty, justice will still have prevailed, and those like you who prejudged this man would owe him an apology. Unfortunately, even if he is found to be not guilty, I'm sure you won't be writing that apology here. Just my opinion.

I'm always cautious when these high-profile allegations are made particularly against a member of a large, deep-pocketed institution. As a mother of adult children, there is no doubt in my mind that I would have been the one arrested if anyone ever inappropriately touched my minor child in my presence....particularly if he had done the same to me. I think that we have to wait and see what the evidence uncovers. Clearly, there are bad priests, teachers, business executives, family members, etc. However, if these charges prove false, this man's reputation is tarnished for life. Prayers for the truth might be in order.

I don't know Father Chris and in this country you are still innocent until proven guilty, so I'll let the courts determine his guilt. However, I am amused at how naive some people can be. Maybe he is a nice guy, John Wayne Gacy was a clown for children and people adored him, but he was still a mass murdering pedophile. Nobody truly knows what anyone else is capable of and just because he didn't molest or rape you doesn't mean he didn't do it to someone else.

I refuse to believe the allegations against Father Chris. We are parishioners of Visitation, attend mass, and my daughter has been in CCD and the children's choir for quite some time. We also live within walking distance to the church and see Father Chris regularly. He is a wonderful, caring man. When we had a few garage sales, he purchased many of my kids' things to send back to an orphanage in India. He also bought a cup of lemonade from my daughter's lemonade stand and gave her $5. My teenage son saw the police taking Father Chris away in handcuffs and I am thankful that my young daughter was not home to witness it. Doesn't anyone think these allegations are strange, that the alleged victims are a mother AND her child???

Like George Carlin said,
"Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed. Results like these do not belong on the résumé of a Supreme Being. This is the kind of $**T you'd expect from an office temp with a bad attitude. @ RoseMarie Sansone, just because someone SEEMS nice and purchases stuff for orphanages, doesn't necessarily mean that they're a saint. Sometimes these sicko's lead extremely perverted and sick lives behind closed doors. I'm not saying it's true, but just because he has done nice things in the past (all part of his job as a priest by the way) doesn't mean he's innocent. Sometimes you need to open your eyes to the bad things in this world. I pray for all involved and I hope this was just a misunderstanding or an action blown out of proportion.

In the article: " During that visit, Ford said, it is alleged that Velan had "inappropriate contact" with the adult mother as well as her minor child."
There are so many facts missing from this story, how could ANYONE make any judgements for - or against- this man?
What exactly is "inappropriate contact"?
Did he pat her on the fanny ? Did he grab a breast? Did he try to kiss her? Did he hug her a little "too long" or "too close"?
What were his intentions while this "inappropriate act" was supposedly taking place? Why was he invited to their home in the first place? Or did he arrive there UNINVITED? These facts matter.
Also the fact that this priest is Indian is also a factor in my mind. He is more susceptible to false allegations from biased people, and/or misunderstanding from ignorant ones.
And the "minor child".... is this child 8 or 10 yrs old? Or is she 16 or 17? Any age under 18 is considered a 'minor'. And when people see the word minor in a story like this - they (naturally) assume a very young, defenseless, innocent child. And it riles up the emotions and the imagination as well.
I don't know Father Chris, I don't go to his church (or ANY church)... but I DO know that people, for many reasons, can and do sometimes accuse people in all sorts of authority positions falsely or mistakenly. It is just as possible that Fr. Chris is innocent as it is possible he is guilty. There are simply not enough facts being revealed here to say....

I agree with Mattie's statements, but we all have to remember one thing: back in the early 90's, they had someone else in that VERY SAME church who was found guilty of something similar. Turns out, this man was around kids all the time, and the church knew. People swore up and down that he couldn't possibly have done it, because he was SUCH A NICE GUY. He was found guilty, and is now registered as a sex offender. So, yes, this priest may be the nicest guy in the world, but it doesn't necessarily mean that he's innocent. Only TIME will tell.

My cousin is one of those children molested by that "man" years ago. When my cousin told his mother and she reported the abuse, the entire community ostracized the family and effectively blocked my other cousins from making their communions and confirmations. They had to go to other towns. I do not know this priest nor have i ever stepped foot in that church (especially after what happened to my family), but instead of blindly believing the man you barely see outside of church could never do such a thing or to automatically decide he's guilty because of his vocation- lets just wait for more information and wish peace on all those involved

M Not that I find it hard to believe, because anything is possible in this world, but I could see father Chris' actions being misconstrued. My family has been with the church for 25 years ;My patents have volunteered at the 8th grade retreat for the past 15 years and I have helped for the last five. This retreat sums up to one adult and one highschool student watching and talking to a group of 8-10 15 yearolds in places of the church such as the priests' kitchen, dinning and living room. To my knowledge father Chris was never a problem there. Also 8 years ago when my family lost my brother to a drunk driver at the age of 20. Father Chris came to his wakes and funeral even though other priests and deacons were doing the readings. He stood on line, which wrapped around the funeral home, in the pouring rain. Came in and blessed my dead brother kisses his forehead and kissed mine and my parents feet because that is a custom where he was from. He hugged all of us and gave some words of wisdom later in life when I would see father Chris he would tell me about his works in India with Mother Theresa before she passed away. Being that I consider myself atheist, I feel my judgement on him is unbiased only knowing few things about him. I thinkits easy to misread what could be considered a comforting gesture in his country.

@Terry D...yes, absolutely. I do not know Fr Chris but it seems that a lot of what has been posted here is pure pure speculation.
At this time, when people hear something even slightly intrigueing about a R C Priest the public jumps all over the story drawing their own conclusions.
Regarding the ''probable cause' statement released by the prosecutor's office...lets remember, the prosecutors office has to make statements like this...this is part of their 'politics'.
Sadly...this man has two strikes against him already in our highly charged environment: 1. He is a Priest and 2. He is an immigrant. Deny all you want people, but these two things will count against him in the 'court if public opinion'.
IF Fr Chris is innocent, his life is already ruined. This sort of tarnish NEVER goes away.
If Fr Chris is guilty, between new practices imposed be The Docese and the criminal justice system, he will be dealt with.
In the meantime, while this makes for a 'juicy' local story, the man is innocent until proven orherwise and the charges are at this point only allegations.

People who are saying how wonderful this man is need to remember that appearances can be deceiving. They usually don't arrest someone and detain them in jail without a preponderance of evidence. My guess is he's done this for awhile and the very diocese that is stating they are cooperating with an investigation and have suspended his ministry privileges. Why do you think they did that so readily? Why not defend him the way all of you who "knew him" are? My guess is they knew the type of man he was and let him continue to be exposed to families and children. Catholicism and the politics behind it are a joke.
Mattie
11:47 am on Tuesday, July 17, 2012
Sorry Ellen, Your guess is BS. Because in our hyper-diligent and hyper-vigilante sexually puritanical society, it does NOT take a 'preponderance of evidence' to get arrested for any sort of 'sex crime'. It merely takes an ACCUSATION.
Investigation and evidence gathering comes after that. For right or wrong, that's the reality.

I agree with many of the posters that we should wait for all the facts to come out before we rush to judge..I am a Catholic who is very involved in our Parish (not Visitation) I am not proud of the way the Catholic Church responded to the horrible incidents of sexual abuse in the past and can only pray that if indeed the allegations are true about Fr. Chris that he will be removed as a priest, and there will be healing for the Mom and child who have suffered. I also hope that if he is cleared all of you Catholic bashers out there will admit that not all priests are molesters and some times the accusers are the ones taking advantage...
It truly saddens me that George Carlin is quoted for his outlook on religion....what a role model... God created man and gave him free will, so if you have an issue with the values and actions of certain men, blame them for what they do, not God!!
I find it rather sad that there is an article on the Patch about a stabbing in a residential neighborhood in Brick and no one seems to be outraged about the decline of our once "safest city" in the country...I am certainly getting more worried about my family's safety as I sit in my own home than I am as I attend Mass or participate at a Church function!

I have known Fr. Chris for years. He is one of the most truly devoted followers if Christ I have ever met. His commitment to his parish community goes far beyond what is expected, yes even for a Priest that devotes their lives to God and His flock. It seems incredulous that the allegations can be true, but hopefully the evidence will come out and he will be exonerated.
If by some chance there is some validity to the charges (I doubt it), then it will be a sad day for the Catholic Church and even sadder for his parishioners who love and respect him.
To the vermin that crawl out of the woodwork and vilify FR Chris without any facts; just the allegations of one person in the privacy of their home, you are despicable.

I find it interesting that everybody defending this man are telling everyone that we don't know the facts and we shouldn't judge him before we do. Then, in the next sentence, they accuse the family of lying and being money chasers. It's amazing, the hypocricy that runs rampant in the mind of the religious. I was baptized in that church, made my first communion there, and haven't been back since. It wasn't the church that turned me away, it was the people in it. This is for all the "non believers", the Catholic Church as well as many other supposed houses of god are full of sexual predators. They prey on the people who are weak of body and mind. Science would not be able to create a predator like this, he has been made in the house of god, however loosely you may want to interpret that. In the laws of human selection many genes and dna are phased out, they would never tolerate a person who harms and destroys the youth which fosters our future. Its disturbing to see so many people BELIEVE?? WHY?? Ask yourself!!!You may be surprised with the answer

You are correct, science could not create those predators, only seek to study them. Science has not evolved to the point of identifying every undesirable gene. Being a believer of whatever religion one may be, gives a personal reference point of good and evil. Plus, we are given free will to make our choices good and bad. That is why we have bad people in the world, and good people to identify and deal with them. You don't have to beleive in the Catholic Church, or Christianity for that matter. But if you don't believe in a supreme being, then what are you left with? Science? Science will always study, and never find the true answer. The answer won't slap you in the face, or drop in your lap. Therefore, you must have faith, and beleive.

Notwithstanding my post to Anti-Atheist earlier, I would like to at least re-emphasize the need to not pass judgement. Our justice system will do its job. That said, I hope those of you that feel the need to trash this priest would feel as equally compelled to sing his praises if he is aquitted of these charges. If not, then you too should seek some higher moral authority to reconcile yourselves to. I'm not of the opinion one way or the other as to whether this man did what he is accused of. I have (like many of you) read about the scum that were accused, charged and found guilty of such actions, a la Penn State. Thankfully, that scum will never do that to anyone again. On the other hand, I have also read where people were accused, charged and finally have it either come out in court that the charges were false, or some monetary settlement was reached. Sure, some of these people were vindicated in our justice system. Either way, the damage to their reputations was done. In my opinion, this case hits closer to home for many of us, so we should give our justice system time to do its job. Also, for Anthony, try not to use the bible as a point of reference to attack a Christian's passionate defense of a fellow Christian. It's cheap, fake and does not lend to any support of your position. I don't think anyone here pretends to be "Christ-like", we only try to follow his example. I have known Fr Chris for years. He has been an inspiration to me, my family and all who know him. I cannot imagine him doing anything to hurt anyone; especially what he is accused of. Fr Chris is the kindest, most caring, holiest man (and priest) I have ever known. It is unimaginable to even think that he is guilty. I know that some priests (and other people in different walks of life) have done horrible things, but I know in my heart that Fr Chris is innocent. May God bless him and help him get through this ordeal.

I just can't believe I spent all this time reading these comments. I do not know Fr Chris but from what I am reading some say he is creepy and others say he is a kind, caring holy man. He is human and capable of doing anything just like any other sicko. He may just be hiding behind a mask. He may also be that kind caring holy man that some say. Hopefully the system will get it right and let go an innocent man or prove a molester guilty.

I hope this isn't true...I know Father Chris he was very loving and caring to my parents. He visited my mother during her time in hospice. He also prayed at her funeral and burial. I saw him as kind, friendly and holy individual.....my prayers go out to all involved. Who ever knows...

I can't believe what you people are posted!
It doesn't matter if you know father Chris or not! or if you go to church or not!
whether you believe in god or not!
What really matters is......
We wait for the truth to come out! and it will in time. This is my church....and I for one will not turn my back on it or father Chris. Have you people giving any thought to the out come? If he didn't do this....how will he over come all of this?
Who are you people to coast that stone? I'll be going to church this Sunday and when I walk in.....and see my god up on that cross, I know I'm a better person because of him. And for those of you who don't believe in god.....I feel nothing but sadness for you all. And for those of you that are already nailing father Chris to the cross....you're no better then the people who did it to Jesus! all those years ago.

Well, there is no point in driving this into the ground. I am done with this thread. I just hope those of you that feed off this terrible incident (no matter how it turns out), can find it in your hearts to wish the best for whoever the victim(s) turn out to be.

For everyone to think about:
" There are approximately 46,000 Catholic priests in the United States and 300 cases filed to date, which is under .7% of the priesthood."
That's * Point* seven percent .... a very much a small fraction of the total number of priests. And those are cases filed, not won or lost, but total accusations leading to arrests and one conclusion or another. Point 7% isn't even worthy of a stereotype, never mind out-and-out priest bashing- so, make a note SNAP lady.

Thank you for the stat's, Mattie; as a Catholic, at times, I am put in a position in which I have to defend our church and it's difficult to do when dealing with small-minded people who irrationally claim, "all priests are molesters ... they rape little boys ... " While you and I both know those sad, shiftless saps are constantly grasping for excuses to alleviate themselves of a simple 45-minutes obligation one day a week and the 'bother' of having to share conversation with their children that will contribute to their faith and overall wellbeing! I appreciate having some statistical information for the next discussion in which I have to defend the priesthood/Catholic Church = )

Well truth be told (again) newbeee, I'm not catholic and haven't been for more than 40 years. BUT nearly my entire family is catholic for many generations. My 83 yr old mother is still active in her church and sings in the choir. I had relatives who were devout enough to attend church not every week, but every single day - until they became very elderly. I grew up seeing priests (and nuns) from two different parishes invited to family members' homes for all sorts of holidays, births, deaths and celebrations. My eldest brother was once in the seminary for a year. So, I'm no stranger to the Catholic church or to priests or nuns.
All that aside; I feel a compulsion to defend this priest to some point, giving him the benefit of the doubt just like I would if he wasn't a priest, but an immigrant instead, or a black man, or a Muslim, or ANYONE who could easily be stereotyped as a "criminal" or "evil" simply because of who they are, what they look like, or where they come from. It's. just. not. right.
If it turns out he's guilty - he's guilty. End of story. That doesn't make ALL (accused) priests guilty. If it turns out he's innocent - he's innocent. That doesn't make ALL (accused) priests innocent, either.

I say he's innocent until proven guilty. I know Father Chris well and do not believe he would do that. It's one word against another, who knows what this woman is like, or if she's a liar or a drug addict. Hope this gets cleared up soon.

Barbara: I said, "who knows what this woman is like, or if she's a liar or a drug addict".
No one knows anything for certain. There are some on this blog who are calling Father Chris a "pervert". What do they know either. It could be possible that she is a liar or addict, I didn't accuse her, I said we don't know either way. Why, do you think it's possible that Father Chris is a "pervert" and that it's impossible for the mother to be a liar?

i dont think he is a pervert at all nor do i think she is a liar or addict. i also believe innocent until proven guilty. the truth will come out. just the way you worded it. someone is at fault and the truth will come out.

P.S. Barbara: Also, I didn't call myself a christian. Why do you assume too?
barbara

P.S. just because you said you knew him well, yes, i assumed. sorry for that. I am a christian and i don't want to blame anyone at this point. Yes, you are right, one word against another. He is being bashed alot on here and he also has alot of support, but i feel that it should not be assumed that she might be a drug addict or liar. i apologize if i offended you.

Not everyone who is accused is guilty. My own pastor was accused and later found to be innocent http://www.msgrwilliammccarthy.com/. I knew him personally and never thought he did it. But in this day and age I would not put anything past anyone.

Barbara: Apology accepted. I guess I got annoyed because I felt my words were taken out ot content. I didn't intend to sound like It was an accusation. I am a catholic but at that point I didn't want anything I said or didn't say to be assumed. Can we call it a truce.

In the past these people making accusations against these other priests were not found to be compulsive liars , drug addicts or other they seemed to be church going people that were violated or taken advantage of...Does not make a good recruiting add for the church..
