Brick Township high school students seeking some book-based and educational diversion during the remaining weeks of summer vacation would do well to check out the suggested reading list from the Brick Township branch of the Ocean County library.
The list offers selections categorized by genre and student grade level, so that each student is geared towards material suitable for their individual level and grade curriculum. Freshmen selections include classics such as “Where The Red Fern Grows” by Wilson Rawls, while senior selections include “Anna Karenina” by Leo Tolstoy.
The lists are extensive, and span from classic literature to contemporary authors delivering works geared towards the high school-aged audience.

I remember a teacher giving a summer assignment of reading Homer's Iliad and Odyssey with a test on it two weeks into the new school year. She handed out this thick paperback book to all of us just before schools end. I looked at it saw this huge amount of reading with very old style language and I thought, "there goes my summer" I kept putting off the assignment until finally I knew I had to read it and started into it. Next thing I knew I was so into it that I forgot to do my favorite summer things like the beach (didn't figure out I could read on the beach until later in life, that's something a teen didn't do back then) crabbing, fishing and trying to surf and put my nose into that book until I had read it cover to cover. Who knew an old book like that could be so cool to read? I pass the test in September with flying colors and I have it on my bucket list to read it again.

"Where the Red Fern Grows" for high school freshmen? I think not. The novel was in my 7th grade anthology, and my brighter 7th graders found it too babyish and slow-moving for their modern tastes.
