The Brick Township Board of Education has scheduled a special meeting Tuesday night where board members will appoint the district's new superintendent.
The appointment follows rounds of interviews conducted by board members over the last few weeks. Those interviews, consistent with state laws, were conducted in private.
Candidates for the position had until May 1 to apply for the job of leading Brick's school system, one of the state's largest suburban districts in the state with just under 10,000 students.
Assuming a superintendent is appointed at the meeting Tuesday, he or she may be able to begin in Brick by Aug. 1, after a customary 60 days notice is given to the candidate's former district, officials have said.
Current Superintendent Walter Hrycenko's contract was not renewed last year by board members. He will revert to the position of assistant superintendent, the last position in which he holds tenure, when the new schools chief takes the helm. The current assistant superintendent, Patricia Lorusso, will be bumped to the position of principal, her last tenured position.
The meeting is set for Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Brick Township High School.

The only item on the agenda is the superintendent appointment. This isn't a regular board meeting, it's a special meeting just for the super selection.

Why do they need a meeting to announce the hiring of a superintendent? They could have just sent an announcement to the media..right? We know it has nothing to do with transparency, this BOE can be called many things, but transparent is not one of them.

The new superintendent's appointment must be approved by a vote. In order to vote, the board must hold a public meeting in accordance with NJ law.

Positive thinking please! We don't want to start off on a bad foot! We have to give Dr. U a chance first. Remember what you said at the meeting Denny- it's time we come together as a District.

AM Tarnowski, Amen to that. And with a McConnell tenure we can come together
as a District to the benefit of the CHILDREN.

I am hoping the best. It is about time we all come together. I hope he will do what is right for the schools and township in general. We need a strong leader. And that leader should be the superintendent - not the board, the BA, the parents, or anyone else but the man put in charge. A good leader takes the opinions of others but then makes up his own mind. I hope we don't forget that fact if and when we disagree with him.
