Brick Soliciting Interest in Demolition, Debris Removal Program

Residents urged to contact township

 

Brick residents whose homes damaged by Superstorm Sandy must be demolished, as well as those whose properties have a large volume of storm debris remianing, may qualify for the township's Private Property Debris Removal (PPDR) program.

"As we know all too well, the storm left some homes in shambles and dumped large volumes of debris, some too big for residents to handle, on private property," said Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis, in a statement. "We have now taken care of the prerequisites to participate in these programs and want to hear from residents who have not yet informed the town of comparable issues with their property."

The program is run through FEMA. Under PPDR, the township hires a contractor to demolish homes or haul away debris, and is reimbursed 75 percent by FEMA for the cost. A homeowner's insurance would cover the other portion, or the township would assume the cost if the homeowner does not have insurance.

The township council approved the program last month after a debate on the issue.

If debris from Sandy is on private property and has not been removed, property owners may be eligible for the PPDR program. Additionally, property owners considering demolition due to damage from Hurricane Sandy may be eligible for assistance through the demolition program.

Residents interested in participating in the PPDR and/or Demolition program are asked to email the following details to sandyinformation@twp.brick.nj.us:

  • Name of person with legal authority over property
  • Lot and Block number (can be found on the township website under resources, then click property tax inquiry)
  • Street Address Telephone number(s)
  • Email address
  • Approximate date of construction
  • Active or inactive heating oil tank currently on property? (If yes, above or below ground?)

The township will contact those who write in, officials said.

question: If I want you do remove my debris, will it be done separately, or on concert with an entire location divided by 25% or, will I have to pay 25%.

The way the program works: The town hires a contractor to perform the work. The town pays the full cost, but is reimbursed 75 percent by FEMA (90 percent reimbursement pending federal intervention). The remaining 25 percent (or 10 percent, potentially) will come from the homeowner's insurance policy, or will be absorbed by the township. In essence, homeowners will not pay as part of the PPDR program.

The Camp itself will have some unique issues given its complicated ownership makeup. We'll try to get an update on that angle soon! I know a lot of Camp residents (year-round and part-time) read the site daily.

People have bulk pick-up that is NOT storm related -did the town cease this service? The lack of communication on this issue is unbelievable. Why are we no longer recieving any services?

Have the street sweepers been mothballed ? Brick really needs a few of them out and about and also fill the potholes/ditches. These basic services have gone away and this was before sandy. I've seen the street sweeper in service around point and they don"t just push the dirt down the street and go around cars. This is the worst administration I have seen in Brick hands down and the mismanagement just goes on and on.

so how does Point handle cars parked in the street if they "don't go around cars"?

Maybe if people would sweep up in front of their own homes it would make a difference, it's not that difficult.

as for potholes, Brick handles Twp. roads and the County & State handle their roads.

They aren't even responding to bulk pick up that is called in. Where is Mr. Pezzarus on this? Why aren't we getting normal bulk pickup service and normal street sweeping service and normal pot hole filling service. And I am referring to bulk pick up that has been called in in addition to being written up on town webcite? zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzsleeping at the switch again methinks or just plain tired. Well guess what we are tired of looking at this crap too.

Call DPW to arrange a bulk pick up, or can request through the Twp portal. Remember we will NOT be picking up any construction debris as per the Twp ordinance. Public works personnnel will schedule your bulk to be picked up.

You always have the option to bring it to the Twp yard at Ridge Road as well.

Response to Mr. Pezzarras:
As stated I already called it in! It is not my garbage to take! We have been looking at an old toilet for over a month now that the neighbors who are NOT Sandy victims threw out. Why isn't your code enforcement going after these people who never call in for a pickup? This town is filthy. We are tired of calling Julie and Joe. We speak to them on a regular basis.

So what happens in this scenario? My flood insurance was maxed out at the $250K
I dont qualify for any ICC because Both ICC and Flood Insurance Caps at $250K. Its not $250K + $30K. Interesting how that isnt really spelled out in your policy....
Obviously my home is substantially damage and needs to be demolished. Who picks up the 25/10%?

tommy you may think i'm ignorant but it sounds like you're too lazy to pick up a broom and sweep up in front of your own home or possibly pick up any small trash that blows down the street.

i'm still interested to know how Point handles the cars parked in the street when they send out their street cleaners. do their sweepers lift the cars up sweep and place the car back on the ground or do they send a midget under the car w/ a dustpan and broom?

also just so you know, County roads are the ones w/ the blue&yellow roadsigns, Twp roads are the neighborhood roads and the only State roads that run through Brick are 88 and 70.

Dan, are you sure on this one? Has the Twp reached out to the insurance companies... and then check how much they will really pay to the town? I thought thw 25% or 10% if we are very fortunate, will be absorbed by all taxpayers in Brick, not just those who need the removal. And, does this include the dirty sand and 3-6' of sand that needs to be moved as well? thanks much.
