Brick Schools Open For 2012-13 School Year

New super, ongoing construction projects greet students

With Labor Day weekend only a memory, it's time to trade in bathing suits and boogie boards for books and binders. Brick schools open their doors to students for the 2012-13 school year Wednesday.

Students in all of the township's schools return to class today.

The school year begins with a new superintendent, Dr. Walter Uszenski, at the helm of the district. The Brick resident was hired over the summer; he previously led the Spotswood school district in Middlesex County.

"I believe there is no higher calling in America than the education, care and well-being of our young people, and the reason is clear," Uszenski wrote in a letter to parents over the summer. "Our youth will determine the quality and character of future generations. In my opinion, to be truly successful, education must be a partnership between schools, parents, students and the community at large."

Students will also see some sprucing up has been done over the summer. There are new bleachers at the football field at Brick Township High School and a new track at Brick Memorial. A gym has been updated at Memorial, while Old Brick will benefit from a new locker room, as well as significant upgrades to the school's science labs, much of which are expected to be completed next month.

Are they going to replace the bleachers on the visitors side of Brick HS football field.
Stupid looking with only 1 side done!

Nice bleachers BUT... In my opinion the much needed improvements on the inside of the school should have been taken care of first !!! Classrooms, bathrooms etc are where the kids are 99% of the time...not sitting on the bleachers.

It looks stupid to do 1 side but not the other...
that is why people refer to brick as BRICKTUCKY...
yes they need to refurbish inside the school also..
which is why I was pissed this year.... the BOE didn't raise taxes by 2%... (0%)...
that $2million could have gone to upgrades...
it's the senior citizens voting down every budget that is the problem with how the schools look.

I would not be for this only because kindergarten is not mandated in this state. (Sad but true.) Perhaps we should be paying for things that are required first. When we are rolling in the money, then let's talk about a full day program that the state does not require in the first place.

I'm all with those saying the money could have been spent elsewhere... that was until I went to a game last year and feared for my life on those bleachers! They were an accident waiting to happen!

We're going to have another story Friday on facilities. I'll give you this tease: you'll find out how bad those old bleachers really were. Ouch!

Oh... those bleachers were in very bad shape...
The visitors side is not much better...
The structural supports on the visitors side is in poor shape also... its not just the wood.
Furthermore, it's not ADA compliant...

There is legislation before the state that would make every district have to offer full day kindergarten. It has yet to be voted on.

I agree that the bleachers were in a horrible, dangerous condition. I am not disputing that fact. Unfortunately in this town, "sports" rank higher than education. I am not against sports (my child participates in the sports programs). I still feel that the money should have been spent for the improvements on the inside of the building.
PS
If anyone knows- I would like to know who decides where the money we have for improvements gets spent.

The problem is.... the last 10-15 years, they haven't spent a dime to improve the facilities...
why..
senior citizens voting down budgets...
BOE cowtailing to senior citizens...
Even this year... they could have had a 2% tax increase with the money going toward improvements.... If you do something every year... the schools wouldn't be in such sad shape as they currently are.

Regarding sports... go look at the fields after schools... even weekends... you will see lots and lots of kids... even adults at the track. There are events such as football, soccer, lacrosse, track that utilize the bleachers everyday!

For the last few years, the BOE has been very transparent in posting the ENTIRE DETAILED budget on the District website. In fact, it is still posted so you should take a look at it. Just go to Brickschools.org and go to the section, "Tell Me About...," that is clearly visible on the District homepage.
Additionally, you could attend BOE meetings. I do recognize attending meetings may not be possible. You have two other options available. Watch the meetings on Channel 20. OR Request A DVD via OPRA. The OPRA form is also on the District website. There is a very nominal charge for the DVD (less than $1.00 I believe). Hope this helps.

As a parent that has sat in those stands for many years, it was long overdue. Once the tornado hit and made sections unuseable it forced everyone to group in the center sections causing even more strain on the structure. For all those that feel the money was best spent elsewhere, think of all the injuries and resulting lawsuits that were inevitable had they not replaced them before they collapsed knowing their condition.
As for those that seem to think they are funny or cool by calling this town Bricktucky, you can always move or make a difference.

btw... it's those types of decisions among others that continue to erode the value of my home...
I was furious of "No tax increase" for schools this year!!!
knowing the facility issues...
they could have increased taxes 2% without going to vote and use the money for facility upgrades... and be ahead of the curve...

JD, stop being naive, no one is disputing doing both sides would have been ideal, but it was fiscally correct for the money that was alotted to only do the one side this year. They knew something had to be done and didn't have enough to do both sides. The home side gets 90+% of all use. Had they used the money to do the other side and didn't start some of the schools repairs would you have supported that decision? As for eroding your property value, bleachers? Seriously? Maybe you should bring your Bricktucky bravado to your neighbors and have them along with yourself clean up your neighborhood to regain property value, not complain about bleachers causing your value to erode.

Schools that are falling apart....
Schools with classroom sizes of 27+...
Schools with poor test results....

That is what is causing my property values to decline vis a vie neighboring districts...
Families with school age kids are not going to choose Brick to move to... just a tour of the facilities (including 1set of bleachers) as well as the report card.... and the look for another town.

funny my child cme home yesterday annoucing that this year again he will not have gym and the reason this time is there is no floor or bleachers. Last year was they don't have adaptive gym for the second semester. They don't offer health or the written driving test to adaptive phy ed kids either! WHY? NO GYM NO HEALTH NO DRIVERS ED. This is what they call the same as regular gym but in a smaller setting? I think NOT!!!

With some of the scores that are coming out of these schools, it doesn't surprise me that the only thing most of you seem concerned with is bleachers. How about worrying about the education these kids are getting, rather than how nice your seat is at a football game.
