Brick School Year Extended Due to Sandy

Students will now be in school until late June

Summer vacation will have to wait this year.

The unexpected seven day closure of Brick schools that resulted from Superstorm Sandy will cost students some beach time come summer.

The Brick school district, like all others statewide, is required to be in session for 180 days. In order to comply with the state regulations, the school year will be extended through June 24.

The township's Board of Education approved a newly-constructed calendar at its meeting Nov. 29.

"There's a lot of time we have to make up," said board member Susan Suter, who did not support extending the school year until the end of June since the weather could turn too hot.

Suter suggested taking days from various breaks, but Superintendent Dr. Walter Uszenski said he surveyed the school community and the majority favored extending the school year.

"After I surveyed all the unions, teachers, administrators, parents and the community, it was unanimously asked not to touch the spring break," Uszenski said. "If we get days off in the winter, it will come off of spring break, so we still could lose those days."

Uszenski said there are "a lot of variables" at work, and state education officials still have the option of lowering the 180 day requirement in the wake of Sandy.

Uszenski said state officials would likely wait until after the winter is over to consider such an option.

Did teachers get paid the regular way or did they have to use sick time or vacation time for time lost from Sandy ..Or did they have to apply for unemployment like so many had to do ??

My assumption is they got paid as usual for 180 days. I also assume they will have to work 180 days. It will be no picnic for the teachers I assure you. I really feel sorry for those students who needed SAT Prep time before taking that important exam. No amount of clocked time will remediate that fact. If warming trends continue plans to go into summer will be tough with no AC. Years of not investing in infrastructure are beginning to take their toll very quickly.

you know, the other loca school districts are all taking MLK day, presidents day and 2 from spring break. why do we have to suffer? Which parents did they poll? PTA parents? teachers who have kids in the district? Not me!!!! I don't agree with this. they should take the days NOW. Why wait? if the last 2 months are any indication of what is to come, then we are screwed on days. From the mayor to the superintendent they are all corrupt. Our kids are made to suffer and we are right along with them. They should really rethink their unthought about plan.

Another Genius blaming the mayor! You voted in the B of ED they hired the superintendent not the mayor why bring the mayor in on this, he and his administration have put in endless hours for the safety of the people of Brick in this disaster, they are still busting their butt working on our recovery! When the mayor is wrong I point it out, but for this kind of problem we should thank God for our Mayor and Governor!

you both grump and voter are nuts. First, i was making a point and not meaning the mayor had anything to do with this. I meant, to the educated person, that all in control of the town whether gov't or school, were corrupt. Finally, every year the school is not off for passover or Rosh hashana. It just so happens that this school year Passover falls on the "spring" vacation. Last year only 2 days were off for passover. For the uninformed, Rosh Hashana is a 2 day holiday and passover is an 8 day holiday. One day for Rosh Hashana is all that is ever given. So look things up before you open your mouths and spew your ideas.

This is stupid it will cost the school system big bucks, extend the school year you have to bay the teachers, bus, lunch staff and keep the schools open longer, my stupid idea is to they have to make up about 90 hours extend the school day by one hr. in elementary school in middle and high school add between 5 and 10 minutes each period that’s 5 hrs. each week , cut spring break (2 days)days by a few days as well as Christmas week (2 days) Presidents day, MLK’s birth day and the time would be made up by the end of March. And as for the Superintendent surveying the schools I have many friends in the system and they knew nothing of this!

If teachers have to work 180 days and they have to extend the schedule to meet that amount of days then how would it cost more money? I too have asked numerous people and parents of students regarding this alleged survey and no one knows anything about it....

Art...
You are wrong...
For instance, a teacher gets paid a set salary for 180 days... capish!
It's not a longer school year... but you are not that bright to figure that out.

What does anyone expect to get out of these few last days anyway. Half these kids can't even make it at walmart as it is, why spend any more of my money.

They took away 1 day from the spring break, presidents day & a 1/2 day on Martin Luther King Jr. Day instead of a full day off. I am also a resident with a child in the school system and I was not asked if I wanted my child to go to to school this long. I mean I understand it is and extra 3 days, but what about children that have asthma and these schools don't have a/c only in the business offices. Obviously they don't care. Can you think in 100 degree weather?

I don't get why people are complaining that they are taking days at the end of the year to comply with the state requirement of 180 days in school for the students. This is the way that Brick Schools have done it for at least the last 20 years. Take from the end of June till they can't go due to contracts and then pick away at the other breaks and days off. So why it is such a big deal now just confuses me.

When I was reading this story my though was 'duh, of course they are taking day in June.'

Teachers won't get paid more they are salary and they have to work the set amount of days and if those are snow days or hurricane days it is all the same. They chose not to have their spring break taken away so now our children pay by going to school in the early summer. I know in past years they took a poll and if a staff memeber had vacation planned for spring break they had to show proof they booked this vacation before the time off occurred and if not then they had to work those days taken away.

Teachers get paid a salary. They didn't get docked pay when school was closed for sandy, but will also not get extra pay for the extended year. If a teachers salary is 50k....that's what they will be paid....there is no overtime pay in education. And if it is too hot outside towards the end of June the district will call for half days....so everyone who is so worried will still be able to get to the beach with their kid on those days. Suck it up people, things happen....if they took away spring break, you would have people on here complaining about that. The only thing that would change any of this is if the state declared certain districts exempt from the 180 rule this year, and they will not do that because all the districts who didn't have to close for sandy will be angry. And BTW, its not just about the teachers being contracted to work a set amount of days....it is the law for students to be in session for 180 days (minus sick days) or they are not considered to have completed that school year.

1) kids should NOT be off for MLking day anyway ...
2) most parents that have to work during the day & have younger children this will actually help, NOT worrying where they are going to have the kids in Feb ( winter break)
3) After memorial day its just going threw the motions, lets be honest, class rooms over 80 degrees children are not learning anyway ....

@ Kate If the kids are called out on 1/2 a days ( do the teachers still get paid for a full day? is that deduced from the salary?)
NO sure what you are talking about going to the beach????
MOST ( not all) people work year round.. they don't get " summers off.
I've been retired for 6 years, & I meet more teachers on the beach then any other profession. & yes they take their vacation days those days it to hot to be in the classrooms YET, the kids are expected to be in the classroom learning) seems very hypocritical to me

Teachers have to stay full day when the kids have 1/2 days..unless day before a holiday break.
Teachers arent paid for the summer..they are contractual employees...their contracts are from sept-june.
Teachers dont get vacation days aside from whats built into the calendar

@ bayboat... when did that change that they only get vacation days that the kids are off?? regardless, just about every month there is at least 1 day off per month.. ( some even more) Not sure of any other job that allows time off like that. Well aware that teachers are not getting paid in the summer BUT they are NOT working so WHY would they get paid??

You are right, bayboat. And, we have lots of winter ahead of us, so the Board may have to chip away at other days before we're done. Mother Nature obviously doesn't check the school calendar before she dumps on us. So no more complaining, please. You're not setting a good example for the kids.

if only 7 days need to be made up so why not just do some 1/2 days on saturdays for a few weeks instead of running into the end of June. Make up the time now as quickly as possible before (if) any snow days hit. Afterall it's the work that was missed this semester (especially for the HS students w/ the block schedule and their finals) that needs to be covered not material to be covered for the upcoming semester.

Most of the people who make negative comments on "the teachers", as if they are all the same, wouldn't last two days in a high school. The teaching profession has been attacked repeatedly for decades. Most who enter the profession these days only last a few years because the pay is too low and the BS is too great.

Teachers get paid for 180 days; There is no union involved unless it goes over the last day of June which is when their contract runs out. I personally think they should use spring break; no matter what they use someone would complain!
