The 2013-14 Brick school district budget will be presented at Thursday's Board of Education meeting.
The budget advertised in an agenda for the meeting calls for a $98,525,693 tax levy, compared to a $97,657,630 tax levy presented in a tentative budget announced last month.
The total school budget will be $146,592,187, up from $144,695,023 in the tentative spending plan.
How the increase - if adopted by the board - will affect local taxation will be covered in Thursday's budget presentation.
The board is also set to vote on two capital improvements at its meeting. The improvements include new doors for Midstreams Elementary School and HVAC upgrades at the district's transportation building.
A copy of the agenda can be found here.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Brick Township High School.

Education should not be funded by property taxes. Sales and income taxes should be used. If educating the children benefits everyone in the state, everyone in the state should contribute, not just homeowners.

I sooo agree! Especially when you have renters who have 5 kids in school and don't pay a dime in property tax.

Since when do renters not contribute towards property taxes. Landlords include property tax costs along with insurance, etc. in their rent price.

Seriously? So, what you are suggesting is that if I get some renters in my property, I no longer have to pay taxes. Why doesn't everybody do this?! Probably because it's flat out wrong. Landlords use rent money to pay the property tax. Businesses (no children) pay property tax. Moreover, any vacant stores, buildings, condos, homes that are available for rent but are empty, the landlord still pays tax. Putting down renters as being freeloaders is pretty lame. Most people rent before buying their first home.

the biggest problem is our taxes go up either way, voting for the budget or not,,,
My problem is, always voting for the budget, I Don't see the money going into the school Or the children, it seems every year the salaries go up every year If we had a way of saying where & how we wanted the money spent more people would support the budget

Let me remind everyone again. You never got to vote on the budget. You only voted on the tax levy, the difference between the two this year being $49,000,000.Now you don't get to vote on that unless it's over the 2%cap.You want a say, show up at the meeting and speak.

Agreed! Strongly agreed. And it isn't so much the rank and file teachers but the administrative salaries that soar.

renters do pay tax just not directly to the town. they pay their landlord who in turn pays the taxes, so yes everyone pays renters and owners.

$146,592,187 and the schools are falling apart. Anyone know what % goes to salaries and benefits? I once heard 90% but I don't know if that is correct, seems high to me.
I would be curious to know how much of this money actually makes it to the schools as in book and pencils. How many vice principals and support staff do we need at each school?

The figure you're asking about is included in the budget documentation that will be released. It will be mentioned in a larger article here examining the budget.

If you can earn and recieve a college degree on line, then you should be able to earn and recieve a high school diploma on line. With IPADS, computers and the internet, public schools have become obsolete.

Good point, I never looked at it that way. However I guess there is something to say about social interaction. It's bad enough now kids seem to sit in front of the TV's and video games for hours on end. I remember as a kid running home from the bus stop, dropping off the books and heading right out for whatever neighborhood vs. neighborhood game was on tap. Now it's Xbox, IPods, ITunes, I This and I that.....

Employee benefits $33,504,012. that is 39.62% of salaries. So roughly 2.5 times 33mil. would be $83.7 million.Add 33 + 83.7 =$116.7 million for salary and benefits. That's about 79% of the total budget. While I admit these are rough numbers, they are close enough.Hope that answers your question.

As stated in prior post, I think Brick Township needs to fight the Federal Government on their policy regarding Abbott Districts who take a disproportionate, lion's share of Federal monies. This is discriminatory and our township, especially now needs these monies. I think it reasonable to conjecture that due to Storm Sandy our taxes are already poised for a hike. Why are we expected to educate our youth on a fraction of what an urban district recieves?

Abbott is a mandate by the state Supreme Court, not the federal government.

Also - these double triple dipping superintendents statewide who collect pensions as well as six figure salaries should be tarred and feathered. Not saying that is the case in Brick dunno but it is prevalent statewide.
