The star of this year's Brick Township High School football roster, Anthony Starego, received some additional recognition for his heroic kick that propelled the Dragons to victory over Toms River North Oct. 19.

Anthony, who has autism, has been the object of national attention after video of him kicking key field goals for Brick began to go viral online. After initial media attention locally, he has been featured on ESPN and many other television networks.

The township council honored Anthony at its meeting Tuesday, and Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis has declared Wednesday, Dec. 19 "Anthony Starego Day" in Brick.

"Anthony, through his hard work and dedication, has become an inspiration to not only his teammates and his peers at Brick Township High School, but to our entire community and people throughout the United States," a resolution approved by the council Tuesday, in his honor, reads.

The resolution also recognized Anthony's parents, Ray and Raylene, as well as Anthony's love for Rutgers University football, which inspired him to play for Brick.

"Thanks to the mayor for doing this for me," Anthony said, tearing up while standing behind the podium as he received a certificate from Council President John Ducey.

He also gave a shout-out to BTHS Principal Dennis Filippone.

"I wish my principal will give me another year to play football," he said. "Love you, Mr. Filippone."
