Brick Police Searching for Man Wanted in Burglary, Assault on 3 Year Old

Girl was Hamilton man's daughter, injured by brick thrown into Sawmill Road apartment

Brick Police say they are searching for a Hamilton man wanted for disobeying a restraining order, then throwing a brick that injured his three-year-old daughter.

The police department is asking for the public's help in locating Edward L. Smith, 25, who Capt. John Rein said violated a final restraining order by entering the Sawmill Road apartment of his ex-girlfriend Saturday night around 9 p.m.

Before police arrived, Smith went to the rear of the apartment and threw a landscaping brick through the sliding glass door window after being told to leave, Rein said.

The couple’s three-year-old daughter was standing in the kitchen near the window and was struck in the mouth by the brick after it crashed through the window.

Police say Smith then re-entered the apartment, smashed his ex-girlfriend's cell phone and fled the area by stealing the ex-girlfriend's vehicle, a 1996 Dodge Stratus. The vehicle was later found in Lakewood at the residence of one of Smith's relatives.

The child was transported to Ocean Medical Center for treatment of her injuries, which included abrasions to her face and a laceration to her upper lip that required stitches. The child also suffered the loss of a tooth in the attack, Rein said.

A warrant for Smith’s arrest was issued by Ocean County Superior Court Judge Francis Hodgson for simple assault, burglary, criminal mischief and theft. Bail has been set at $150,000 with no option to post a 10 percent bond.

Smith is described as a black male, 6 feet tall, weighing 180 pounds with brown eyes and black hair. He was last seen in the area of Congress Street in Lakewood but has family and contacts in the Trenton and Camden areas.

Anyone with information as to Smith's whereabouts is being asked to contact Brick Police Detective Robert Shepherd at 732-262-1120 or their local police department.

Gee, those used to be decent apartments / townhouses back in the 1980's. Don't tell me Affordable Housing and all the Entitlement programs haven't created GENERATIONS of SCUMBAGS, and are DESTROYING our beautiful town.
I want to have a garage buit with the money I WORKED FOR and have already been TAXED ON. I am told there is a 1% Affordable Housing fee on top of that. It is SICKENING.
And yes, I am making the assumption.

Herbertsville was one of the nicest areas in Brick. What the hell has happened there to change it? I'll give you three guesses. Last two don't count.

You know maybe it is time to hold the landlords responsable for who the rent to. If the police are called for something like this, the landlord should be handed a bill for the officers time. Maybe it would deter them from renting to Lakewoods upstanding citizens.

Landlords don't care and neither do the complexes. As long as they make their money, so what. That is one of the many reasons this town is going under. And now, they are threatening us AGAIN, with layoffs. This town is a mess....

Restraining orders dont work! NJ needs freedom to carry! A couple slugs into this slug & tax payers dont have to feed & house him for years in prison.
As for the dumb comments about billing the landlords for renting to these P0S What century do you live in? Lawyers (the real scum) have made it impossible

Do the landlords know who they are renting to? Yes , and no. We lived next door to renters - a woman and her 2 teenage daughters. Then it became, the mother, the 2 daughter, and then the mother's boyfriend and the 2 teenage daughters boyfriends. The landlord got NUMEROUS complaints about them; problem is in order to evict, you have to get a court order. That can take months. So should we bill landlords? I don't know, but I think we in this community can all agree, SOMETHING needs to be done.

Sounds exactly like the low lifes that lived across the street from us for a while. I notified the landlord who only lives about a quarter of a mile away that the police were at the house every couple of weeks and they were checking for drugs. The landlord said she would send her brother over while all this was in progress but he never came nor did she. The daughter would have a million boys over after midnight and ultimately a fight would start. It was like watching a bad movie. Thank God they are gone, I think they must have stiffed her for the rent and left in the middle of the night. I don't feel sorry for her. No consideration was given to the people that have lived in this neighborhood for years.
