Brick Gets Rt. 70 Pedestrian Safety Grant

Grant will hopefully solve issue of how to cross Route 70 on foot

Walking from the Kohl's shopping center to Brick Plaza is difficult, to say the least.

It's not uncommon to see pedestrians jumping the Jersey barrier that divides Route 70 to make it across the busy road to get from one side to the other.

The answer to the issues in that part of town may have come in the form of a pedestrian safety grant awarded to the township last week. The $308,600 grant will go towards a concrete solution to make crossing Route 70 easier in the area of the shopping district.

"You walk down Chambers Bridge Road and you can't get from one plaza to the other," said Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis.

Complicating matters in any improvement project, however, will be the importance of the intersection of Chambers Bridge Road and Route 70 to the township's traffic flow. Even minor changes can lead to serious delays, the mayor said.

"Want to make sure we don't create a traffic problem," he said.

Township officials will sit down with engineers to find a solution, then use the grant funding to implement it.

"We're going to sit down and put something down in a concrete form," Acropolis said.

Brick wasn't the only local municipality to receive grant funding last week.

Point Pleasant Beach got $250,000 to fund improvements to Grant Avenue, Point Boro received $350,000 for improvements to Edgar Road and Roberts Place, while Mantoloking received $27,000 to go toward drainage improvements along Bay Avenue.

The full list of grants is available on a state website.

I agree with the safety issue 100% but why is the Township once again doing work on Rt.70, isn't this a State Highway ? This should be paid by the State and the Township should file applications for the improvements of neighborhood street to off set the capital expenditures of the Townships debt.

It's a state grant, so the state will be footing the bill.

Well they could wait 20 years for the state to do something (hint: they won't) or they can be proactive and do something about it. Sure it sucks we have to pay for it, but it beats the alternative of someone getting killed.

I understand that but other Municipalities file for these State funds and the request for their "Community Streets" - The Township should stay out of repairing "STATE HIGHWAYS" you wouldn't see the Township correcteing a problem with the Parkway ramp or the the non existing sidewalks under the Parkway underpass on Chambersbridge Road. We should be correcting our neighborhood streets first.

Will part of the improvements be crosswalks at 70 and Chambers Bridge?

weather the town or the state or federal gov't pays for it it still comes out of your tax dollars. they are just taking it from a different "pocket"

Dan- In your story it states the Township is going to sit down with the Township Engineer and work out a plan. When you submit your request to the State for consideration a plan is already worked out. What exactly is being done on this project ?
Are new sidewalks being installed ? Are new traffic signals being installed with amplified system for the hearing impaired? Are new curb cuts being installed for handicap accessability ? What is the exact location of the proposed roadwork ?

They're deciding what the project will entail. A plan has not been worked out. When it is, we'll report back.

Just install another MORON senior deflection fence as on Chambers Bridge Rd. and force idiots to cross at the intersection! I am sorry I don’t have sympathy for stooped people, it’s like people who get killed by trains did the train chase them down the street NO they were walking the tracks with their I-pods and are killed. I have seen whole families of our un-invited guest from below Texas and Arizona climbing the divider! There is no cure for stooped so even if the cross walks are improved and you don’t put up a Moron proof fence things will not change!

This is silly. Why are we encouraging people to cross a highway first of all?! We do not live in a walk friendly city.. thus why some people live here. If you would like to take a stroll on over to ''the shoprite'' or wherever the heck you are walking to and from, live someplace where walking is popular. We do not have sidewalks--no this is not me asking for them to be put in.. ever. Majority of the road ways here are highway and multilane roads, please stop encouraging people to cross these roads.

The lights as is are not long enough for someone to cross safely and traffic is a nightmare--now imagine longer wait times at lights.

Build something constructive (if anything) like a pedestrian bridge that does not impede with traffic and keeps idiots from trying to run across the highways with 30 children in tow.

Does anyone know what construction they are doing near Exit 88 on Rt 70? I am hoping they are putting in a ramp to Parkway South, though I doubt it. Does anyone have any info on that contruction? Thanks!

They are widening the parkway from Toms River to Wall, Plus expanding the exits that only have two access points to be full 4 direction entrance and exits, North and South in each direction. Each of these exits in Brick is scheduled for the expansion at some point in the future. I am not sure if they will all be finished along with the current project, but that would be the best in my opinion. There have been so many stories and reports on this over the last 10 years it is hard to keep them all strait as to when they will be done.

So, you ARE saying they are adding a south-bound entrance?? Or no? Sorry. Having a south-bound exit here would be wonderful!! There is no close South entrance near here without having to deal with the usual crazy traffic in this area to get to it.

Yes I am pretty sure plus they are also moving the Northbound entrance to be off of Shorrock Road/route 70 intersection going behind the hotel onto a safer and longer entrance ramp further up from where it is now.

Oh.. that is interesting! Well, right now, if you are traveling west bound on Rt 70 from Brick plaza, and you need to get on PW North, you have to do that ridiculous jughandle, merging with the exiting Parkway traffic, and make a left at that light. It only adds to the horrible traffic jam already there, especially at peak hours. I am thrilled to hear they are putting in a PW South entrance there! Thanks for your input John!
