Bed Bugs Put to Sleep: Town Hall Reopens Friday

Dogs, exterminator used to rid municipal complex of critters

Brick's municipal complex will be open Friday, a day after a bout with bed bugs left the building shut down.

Barricades blocked the entrance to the Chambers Bridge Road building on Thursday, after it was closed following bed bugs being discovered in the tax office, officials said.

But by Thursday night, the all-clear was given to reopen the building.

"We have been given the go ahead to reopen tomorrow," said township spokesman Ed Moroney, in an e-mail.

Moroney said a pest control service brought in a specially-trained dog to sniff out where the bed bugs were, "and the appropriate actions were taken."

While known as "bed bugs," the tiny, parasitic insects don't necessarily live in beds or even residential homes. According to the North Carolina State University Department of Entomology, bed bugs are most often transported from one location to another by piggy-backing on luggage, briefcases and similar items. Offices, which include a great amount of ductwork and false ceilings, provide passageways for the bugs to spread.

One of the most high-profile bed bug appearances came in 2010, when radio host Howard Stern's studio in the SiriusXM Satellite Radio office building in New York City was treated due to an infestation.

Bed bugs feed by injecting their mouthparts into a host – a human or an animal – and injesting its blood.

I am sorry, I know this isn't really funny, but a perverse streak in me finds it hilarious.

I too find it hilarious except for the fact the exterminator said the other bloodsuckers couldn't be removed until November 2013.

Once you have an infestation, one treatment isnt going to do it. Dogs only detect live bugs not their eggs.

At least Steve and Juan were affected since the are never in town hall.

I had business at the courthouse yesterday - i went and there was a barracade in front with a taped peice of copy paper saying municiple bldg was closed. Numerous people were trying to go to court or had business also and standing around wondering what happened. I called the Building Dept from my cell phone and thats how i found out. So i was leaving and there were multiple police officers chatting behind the building. I mentioned that it would be a good idea to have someone inform people of what was going on.. so those that had court dates ect were informed. The cop i spoke to dismissingly said 'whats the big deal the building is closed' i said yes but those who have court dates and things you could tell them they will be sent resched dates in the mail.. you know provide a public service, be informative. After all, all those people who work in the building were asked to leave and i'm sure they were paid from our tax dollars and not one could have stayed to inform those that had business? Not handled well at all!!

I love how a story about bed bugs, turns into cop bashing. The court has nothing to do with the police. You must have been one of the 1,000,000 drivers in brick that think the rules dnt apply to them and drive all over the road and do as you please with no reguard for anyones safety, until you were caught once and yelled at by the Mean Brick Policeman who probably didn't write you a ticket cause he didn't have time too because he was too busy responding to your cousins house for a domestic violence call. oh and @oldkodger, yes that mean police officer will still get his paycheck, and still die for you if he had too... go to a counrty that doesn't have police or police that dnt care about thier community ... see how long you last ... so big with your words on the internet

Maddy, you sound mad, I'm 67 and have been driving for 50 years, had one "1" speeding ticket when I was a teenager. I still don't like cops with an attitude that they are special. They are in the service of the people and should not dismiss what mmuha mentioned to the cop. If you get a thrill up your leg when you see a cop please learn to be discrete about it.. By the way I dnt care, whatever that means.

the Township alerted all media when the decision to close was made including this website, local newspapers and radio stations. The Township changed the telephone answering system to inform all callers about the closure. The closure was posted it on social media and the municipal television station. Efforts to inform the public were made.

How about true customer service. Contact the individual's directly so there is no confusion. Perhaps when you have a medical appointment and the doctor decides to take a vacation day, you should check the media, newspapers etc...as you recommend.

They must have hired some discount exterminator. You cannot rid a building of bed bugs in that short a time period. They will definitely close again in a week or so when more eggs hatch. Unless you work there, I would stay away.

For each infestation three treatments are needed over a course of about three weeks. Then the dogs need to be used every three months. These things are tough to get rid of.

You would have to be deaf dumb and blind not to know the offices were closed yesterday! The township did a great job of informing all the media outlets plus Facebook and Twitter and all the NY and Philly channels. All joking aside it is sort of an embarrassing PR for the township to put out and the honesty with which it was done is refreshing for what usually comes out of town hall. I do feel bad for the employees and cops families who may have been exposed to this menace, unfortunately bed bugs are having a comeback which is fierce and any of us could end up with them!

J.W. Did you say HONESTY? According to the article in the A.P.P. I read today the first bed bugs were found a month ago in the jail, then last Monday in human resources and Thursday in the tax office. These are written as direct quotes from Scott Pezarras. They waited one month until the entire building was infected to inform the public. You call that HONESTY ?

Brick has the ugliest Town hall building in the country. It looks like some stupid space age lunar building. Or it looks like the cooling fins on a concrete Harley Davidson motor cycle engine.

Someone told me that the bed bugs just got a $50,000.00 a year raise, and they have only been in townhall for a month . Seems to be a pattern.
