Bed Bugs Force Brick Town Hall to Close 'Indefinitely'

Extermination set for this afternoon

Don't let the bed bugs bite.

The small critters forced the closure of the Brick municipal building Thursday. Township officials say the building will be closed indefinitely due to an "infestation" of the nocturnal parasites.

Pest control efforts will start Thursday afternoon, officials said.

"The safety and well-being of the citizens that visit our building and our employees is our paramount concern," said Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis, in an e-mail Thursday morning about the closure. "The best course of action is to limit exposure while we work to exterminate the bed bugs."

The building's closing comes at an inopportune time, since third quarter tax bills came due this week. Property taxes will not be collected while the building is closed, but the payment deadline will be extended to reflect the length of the closure.

Municipal court proceedings have been cancelled for Aug. 2.

The Brick Township Police Department will temporarily relocate their operations to the Mobile Command Unit at the municipal complex.

Municipal departments not housed at the municipal complex – Public Works, Recreation, Senior Outreach and the beach office – will remain open. Off-site events such as Thursday's car show at Windward Beach will also be unaffected.

Residents can monitor Patch, or BTV 20 for updates.

Lisa, you have plenty of time to get your license, there is only a 72 hour waiting period. Email clerk@twp.brick.nj.us if you have questions or are worried about making it in for an appointment in time.

I heard there was an infestation of bed bugs at the TRMUA building recently. Do you think there is a connection between the two?

Bed bugs are no joke... And they breed like cockroaches! And it really takes a long time to get rid of them! They were never native to here u can thank all of the people coming over from other countries illegally! And they are not only in brick but seaside as well!!! And even the cleanest house can have them!

In all fairness, they shouldn't be working around bed bugs and bringing them back home to their families. That's how these things spread.

The staff in those offices where the infestation was found had better exterminate their homes as well, because these pests can live for YEARS without a food source. It may have been brought in to the building by an employee from home. I understand it costs a fortune to get rid of these bugs. Town Hall should get an extermination company with a trained dog to sniff them out so they can rid the building for good. They really do have specially trained canines for this problem. It's such a disgusting problem.

Let me get this straight: the people who went into town hall yesterday and paid their taxes on time get the bonus of maybe having bedbugs! But, those who did not pay on the first get an extension for the days town hall is closed? Ony in Brick!

The bed bugs are a small problem that can be fixed quick. Now the real problems work in the offices in town hall that need to be removed. Hey Mayor are you using the money from the "Red Light Scamera" to pay for the exterminator?
