Automated Recycling Cans Start Going to Residents This Week

Automated recycling expected to begin in 4-6 weeks

Brick residents will begin receiving automated recycling cans Wednesday.

The 95-gallon cans will be the same size as residents' current trash cans, and as a result, pickup will be switched to a bi-weekly schedule from weekly pickup.

The township expects the assembly and delivery of the cans to all residents' homes will be complete in four to six weeks. Once every home in the township has an automated can, the town will begin its automated collection, Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis said in a statement.

"The move to automated recycling will provide long term savings to taxpayers through decreased landfill tipping fees and increased recycling revenue," said Acropolis. "Based on our conversations with other towns that automated their recycling, we expect a significant increase in the amount our citizens recycle."

The automated recycling program will also allow the township to "redeploy resources to other areas of need in the Public Works Department," said Acropolis.

Better participation in recycling could pay off for township taxpayers.

An uptick of 10 percent in recycling participation will mean a savings of about $200,000 for the township in tipping fees associated with normal garbage disposal at a landfill, Business Administrator Scott Pezarras has said.

Data collected by the township shows between 36 and 38 percent of residents recycle.

Identifying neighborhoods with low participation will get easier once the automated recycling program is in place, Pezarras said. Modern automated recycling cans come with tiny chips located inside that are tracked when the truck dumps its contents.

Pezarras said that will allow the township to target future informational campaigns with the intent of increasing participation.

Residents are being asked by the township to refrain from using the new cans until the program is actually in place and the new automated trucks are ready to begin their routes.

"Automated cans are not compatible with traditional recycling collection," said Public Works Director Glenn Campbell. "Our crews will not collect from homes that use the automated cans before the transition."

Well since every resident in Brick probably does not read The Patch, I think it would be a good idea if DPW let people know NOT to use their new cans until the Twp is ready to begin the new system or they're going to have some pretty PO'd residents who fill the new cans only to see they are not being used yet.

When they are ready to begin the new system, how will we know what the schedule is going to be?

Also, will we have the option of purchasing a second can as we were w/ regular garbage?

Clam, do you look for things to complain about? The town is giving you a nice new recycling can and I would bet they are going to hand out instructions for their use. It will look a whole lot better than the variety of baskets, buckets beat up old garbage cans that the residents use now. Look at the glass as half full for once.

Instructions? how hard can it be to use the cans?
1. open lid
2.insert recycling
3.close lid
4. repeat steps 1-3 as often as necessary until recycling day
5. roll can out to street for pick up
6. when empty remove can from street
7. repeat 5&6 every other week

the question and comment I made were out of curiosity not complaint. when I read an article designed to relay information I kind of hope that all the necessary info is in the article. the good thing about the Patch is that you can post a comment/question regarding an article and usually get an answer when one becomes available.

I would like to purchase a 2nd can if they are available.

i'll be almost anything many people will see the can on the street and begin filling them up the day they arrive and then put them out on the street for normal pick up.

btw...I don't look for things to complain about, it just comes naturally.

Can we please stop spending taxpayer money on "informational campaigns." Anyone who is currently not recycling is well aware that it is mandatory to recycle and has been for several years. Residents who choose NOT to recycle are simply too lazy and selfish to separate their recyclables from their regular trash. It is easier for them to just dump everything in the same bag. The residents who have two garbage cans at the curb every week on garbage pickup day, but NEVER have any recyclables on recycle day, are well aware of the law.

Your not thinking long-term enogh because if 10% more people recycle, the town could save $200,000/year in tipping fees. Within 60-70 years these cans will have payed for themselves, then it's nothing but profit.

This is an overreach of the government in my opinion. As you can see in the article, they are going to track "who is and who is not" recycling and give them a nudge! People need to WAKE up!

The chip that tracks your recycling actvity can join the transponder that tracks your travel thru the EZ Pass system (Remember when they were installing EZ Pass and they swore it would lnever be used for tracking or traffic enforcemenmt?) and the red-light cameras that watch your passage around town so that the Government can "Help" you.

Government overreach? One of the primary functions of government is to collect garbage. Setting the rules in the way they collect garbage is certainly acceptable. The rule about recycling: You must recycle. If you do not recycle, you should be fined. If government did not require recycling, our cost for garbage removal would be higher.
Is this a proper function of government? Of course, governments have been mandating sanitation issues like garbage collection since the end of the middle ages. Improper sanitation causes rodents, vermin, and the spread of diseases. All you libertarians please think before you jump to irrational conclusions like government is overreaching when regulating one of their primary functions.

First off, recycling is the LAW...not optional. Second, reducing the amount of garbage that goes to the landfill reduces tipping fees that are based on tonnage. The numbers prove out that recycling is morally & fiscally responsible. IMO, the lack of enforcement [i.e. warning for 1st offense & a summons on the following offenses] is one of the things that keeps towns from being successful. Of course, if that was attempted here in Brick, people would be going bananas about who got the job, why did they get a summons, etc. It's real easy, don't break the law, you don't get a summons, just like red light cams ;-)

I hope within that information the town let's residents know what exactly is recycable. Plastic containers with bottle necks are the only plastics that you can recyle. Plastic butter tubs and other plastic containers and the like are not recycable. I had this agrument a long while ago with the powers that be. Only bottle neck plastics are recycable. I also recycle mixed paper. I guess we'll be mixing paper with plastic???!!!! And now the only issue is having an unsightly robo can in driveways. I have recycled since day one, I can't wait to get my large can. BUT the first thing I'm going to do even before it gets to my backyard, is to take out my RFID chip reader and see what's on that chip, which I assume will be nothing but an ID # that is assigned to the home. I have this awful feeling, that the RFID chip in these cans are going to fail, a lot., It's NOBODY'S F'N business how often you put out your cans, keeping track of such data is an intrusion my privacy. SORRY! Let's examine how this "info" could be used for ill good. Let's fast forward the program, it's now four years later into the program, lots of data has been collected on the use of your can and your habits. Someone notices that every year for the last three you have faithfully used your can except every August, which means you must go on vacation during that period of time, the pattern is there, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure that out. So the next thing you know, somebody passes on that info, you go on vacation the next August and come back to a totally wrecked and robbed house thanks to your robo can. Is this scenario far fetched. HELL NO. It might even be fun to play musical garbage cans and trade them around with friends in town to skew the data. Some RFID chip readers can read over 100+ ft away, I don't know what kind of criminal use this might have with the cans, but I'm sure someone will a criminal mind will figure something out.

Is the scenario far-fetched? HELL NO IT'S PARANOIA. You must love conspiracy theories. Having an RFID chip in your recycling can will not lead to your home getting wrecked and burglarized, but it's hilarious you think it would. I guess you don't get a paper delivered - the paper company will observe the pattern of no deliveries in August, someone will pass that info on and you'll come back to a wrecked and burglarized home. I guess you let mail pile up in the mailbox, because if you stopped your mail, the US Postal Authorities will spot the trend and you'll come back to a wrecked and burglarized home. I guess you don't ask the neighbors to keep an eye on the premises, because they'll pass that info on and you'll come back to a wrecked and burglarized home. PARANOIA WILL DESTROY 'YA....

The town has allowed you to recycle for years, that in NO WAY gives them the authority to track my garbage. Their job is to collect the garbage, NOT TRACK who is and how much you are disposing of. There is no need for a tracking. This is BIG BROTHER OVERSTEPPING and it's just going to get worse unitil people take a stand (before it is too late). Open your eyes!

We do need recycling policed. The use of a chip is not big brother because the same information could be gathered by the garbage men, but less efficiently and at a higher cost. If using the chip is a cost effective way to catch violators, use it. If not caught homeowners that refuse to recycle would cost taxpayers more money. The township is paid for its recyclables, and saves on tipping fees at the dump. If you do not want someone looking at your garbage, or trying to determine if you are recycling then bring your trash to the dump yourself and pay the dump directly. Your garbage is being left out for the township. It is not private once you put it out for the township to collect. I do not think Bush, Obama, the trilateral commission, the new world order, and The United Nations have conspired to know what is in your trash. OK, maybe just Steve Acropolis and DPW.

How about we put a tracking device on our township officials so we know when and where they are doing their jobs?? Sounds fair to me...You track me...I track you..!!!

The chip would only tell them who does not put out a can. The sanitation inspector would still need to check your regular garbage to look for recyclables. They could only send you a violation if they found recyclables in the trash. Years ago, I know someone that saw a sanitation inspector stop and look in his garbage can. My friend asked what he was looking for. The inspector questioned why no newspaper recyclables were put out in many weeks, when they normally put out a lot. My friend showed the inspector the bin of newspapers that he had and was donating to a recycling drive by the boy scouts. The inspector apologized for bothering him and left. I guess the boy scouts do not collect recyclables anymore. The point is this is just a tool so they do not have to look into every can or ask drivers to record every house without recyclables.

This was the most entertainment on reading the comment's.Just for FYI I had one of these recycle trash can in Del and was very nice ,there are section in the trash can ,one for paper ,then glass, then tin's ,cylinder like so they come out for each section to be placed in correct bin for sorting for the them. Was very nice and easy and bundling paper or sorted can's for folk just one nice for them to separate .

So how do I get rid of my current plastic recycling cans?
They don't have a bottle neck, so by the current rules they are NOT fit to be recycled?
I don't understand that restriction- Margarine tubs are the exact same plastic as some bottles, just a different shape. Isn't all the plastic aggregated , shredded and remelted for reuse?

as far as getting rid of your old cans...
On Drum Point over by Wawa, one resident has actually created a mailbox post out of his old garbage can. He just turned the can upside down and taped the mailbox to the top of the can. Creative and classy!

I look at it this way, anything that has the "recycle" emblem on it, it goes into the recycling container and let them sort it out at the facility. if they don't want it they can remove it, it creates jobs.

you could try putting out your old recycling cans on the curb with a sign that says "take this" but they might just take the signs and leave the cans...sigh.

Just read from Ocean County recyclable flyer, that no "soiled" used Pizza boxes are accepted in the recycling bin. wow, there is a lot that I never realized we could NOT put in the recycling bin. thanks for putting that OCSolid Waste site address. It was very helpful. Everyone should read it.

Also, most people don't realize that the bottle tops do NOT go with the plastic and glass. If they aren't careful Tinkerbelle is going to swoop down and they will be eating gruel for half of eternity. I am only half kidding the other half is true.

Yeah I got one of those "nudges" a few years ago when a town employee sat in his car on my street and randomly picked people to send letters. I reamed someone out at the township about that. Had the lazy guy had gotten out of his car he would have seen the over flowing recycle bin on the side of my house, not even in the back yard, on the very open & easily seen side of my house that someone had forgotten to take out AGAIN.

I keep reading that recycling isn't all that it's cracked up to be as far as costs & fossil fuel required to recycle. But someone thought it would be a good idea a long time ago & now there is no getting back.

Did you know his guy use to work in the recreation department and was transferred to DWP for fighting with other employees? I guess this is the fair treatment acropolis's buddies get, eh?

Do your homework, this guy is freshly from the recreation department and was transferred to dwp as the recycling enforcer. Funny how this guy avoided layoffs back in 2008. This guy was transferred in 2007.

@dpwenforcer~ iIs that the guy they made the settlement to the lady for? She left town after they paid her. She was mumbling about elevators back then. Or is that the guy who was bullying his co~workers?

I agree about recycling not being all its cracked up to be. The moral issue aside someone would have to convince me with real numbers that with the current method it is cost effective to recycle plastic bottles. If my garbage can was full to the top with spring water bottles how much could it possibly weigh. I believe i read an article not that long ago about how the tipping fees were increased to a little over a hundred bucks. According to this article http://www.ocean.nj.us/PressReleaseDetailPage.aspx?Name=753 from three years ago the max plastic is sold at was $222 at its maximum and $128 low. Also from the article if I did my math correctly the tipping fee at that time was 72.16. If i add the tipping fee of 72.16 with the best case scenario price of 222 it comes to 294.16 total savings/earned. Does anyone believe that a bunch of union guys driving around in ridiculously expensive vehicles (insurance,maintenance,etc..that dont crush up anything by the way) while burning unbelivably expensive diesel is going to cost us less than 294.16 to pick up a TON of plastic water bottles and deliver it to the recycling facility.I dont think i can be convinced of that. The new method with a truck that presumably can crush up stuff like one of the garbage trucks might make it feasable but the currrent method seems to be a waste especially when you consider that they are picking up every week.

@mineeeemoh-it was the guy who bullied his co-workers. He drove around in a burrow work gmc and sent all you tax payers threatening letters telling all of ya what would happen if you didnt recycle.

This guy went from bullying co-workers to bullying tax payers in to recycling or they would be fined.

@ Resident;

well the new blue recycle can is here and guess what, it did not come w/ any instructions, out of curiosity I asked a few neighbors if their came w/ any instructions or any type of information and none of theirs did either.

now that we have these nice new cans, I hope a new ordinance is passed saying that the cans cannot be stored in the front of a residence.

Whoever the heck got this bid should come back and exchange them out. Not only mine I have seen many all bent out of shape. thank you Mayor.

all the ones I saw on my street had warped lids also, these are not as heavy duty as the regular trash cans are.

hopefully after the sun has a chance to heat them up a little the lid will seat itself properly.

I'm so close I can almost taste it. LOL. I am honestly happy to hear from people that have found a way to get out of here. Good Luck to you.

One person above said that the garbage man who showed up on Mondays offered to take her Tuesday recyclables. Not for nothing but if the people who work for the town don't follow any rules why would the town fine anyone who didn't recycle? Now they want to track when we use our robocan how about they track what their employees are doing when they are working? Big brother is always watching.

Two things happened. Yes the are working overtime or the town forced the employee to take off on a monday or thursday. This usually only happens in rotation when an event is going on down at the beach or marina.Knowing its the off season and there aint stuff happening, the workers were receiving overtime unfortunately.

I just received my can and the top is warped and bent and the plastic inner lip is broken in sections and bent; the can looks like it was put through the mill and someone went to town with a pair of pliers on it. I watched as they threw the can down in the truck and then down off the truck onto the street. Amazing.

so contact the DPW and tell them you want a new one, take pic.'s w/ a date stamp so they know it just happened. give them a little time because they are probably in the new distribution phase and might handle exchanges at a later date.

my dumpster was delivered about 2 weeks ago w/ a warped lid that has since seated itself into a semi-normal position. i'm guessing w/ a little more time and some sun it will eventually be just fine.

not only did the can truck move 20 mph down herbertsville road at rush hour yesterday morning, they had the balls not to pull over and the 2 can-smashers on the back laughed at the mile-long traffic jam behind them! MORONS. JUST PLAIN MORONS.
