Animal Cruelty Suspect Makes First Court Appearance

Nat Sladkin appears in Brick municipal court

One of the two operators of the Brick Township pet shop accused of cruelty to animals made an appearance in municipal court Thursday night.

Nathan "Nat" Sladkin, a 71-year-old Farmingdale resident who managed the Puppies Galore pet store on Hooper Avenue, appeared before Judge Robert Lepore for an arraignment hearing.

Sladkin is facing four counts of cruelty to animals filed by investigators with the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The owner of the store, Old Bridge resident Maria De Santis, 57, is facing 38 counts of animal cruelty.

Dressed in a black jacket, khaki pants and a red shirt, Sladkin tilted his head to the side and quietly listened to Lepore read the potential penalties for each charge – up to six months in the county jail and a fine of $1,000, plus various court fees. He could also face between one and three years of probation.

After the charges were read, Sladkin briskly walked out of the court room, then refused to comment on the case to a reporter, saying, "no comment."

De Santis was also scheduled to appear in court Thursday, but her appearance was adjourned after she had retained an attorney, court staff told Brick Patch.

Sladkin told a court officer he was planning on hiring an attorney as he walked out of the municipal complex.

The cruelty charges against Sladkin and De Santis arose after authorities removed 39 puppies from the store they operated. Of the 39, veterinarians identified 26 as being ill, including four who were severely ill and were taken to a veterinary trauma center.

Officials with the SPCA said earlier this week that the charges were filed for failure to provide necessary sustenance in the form of veterinary care for the puppies.

Sladkin's legal troubles date back decades. According to a 1995 article that appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Sladkin and his wife were ordered to pay $17,500 in fines stemming from his operation of a pet store on Arnold Avenue in Point Pleasant Beach. That store, Pet Depot, is now closed.

A hearing on the status on the Brick store is set for Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., township officials confirmed this week.

The puppies that were removed from the store are being held at animal shelters while the case is being resolved.

how can Ocean County keep letting people open stores like this? From the Pet Depot on Arnold Ave to Brick? I went to the Pet Depot just once. Disgusting, and right under Pt Beach Police Station's noses. Guess when licenses are applied for, no background checks are done. If none are required, then there should be, especially in this industry.
Do people REALLY think they are getting exotic pets in "pet stores"???

Betty,

Nat Sladkin, coincidentally, was the President of the Chamber of Commerce in Point Beach and also the President of the Republican Club while he was operating the Pet Depot in the Beach. It's hard to make this stuff up.

These subhuman cretins need to be sentenced to some hard time in county jail, at the very least. Why on earth does any town need a store that sells dogs and cats!!??? We have literally MILLIONS of beautiful puppies, dogs, kittens, and cats who desperately need a home. CLOSE DOWN all stores that sell them.

Good job Dr. Adam Christman and the SPCA for making sure this store and the cretents that own it are brought to justice. The town had nothing to do with this except for providing a license they should have never awarded. Stiffer penalties for treating animals this way is definitely warranted.

Andy, it would be a travesty if JAIL TIME is not SERVED. Nat Sladkin has inflicted more harm and heartache to innocent animals, unsuspecting consumers and families for decades.

If on March 01, 2012 our Court System allows him to get away with probation, it would be an injustice beyond comprehension. JAIL TIME IS WARRANTED, and I could not agree with you more.

The Sladkins should not be able to keep opening stores under new names when one closes. We too were victims of Pet Depot. Fortunately we receieved all monies back on vet bills after fighting for months. I agree they now need to serve jail time and not be able to come close to any animal stores or animals for that matter. Sad.

Friends, what it really comes down to is business. If people would simply visit shelters and adopt puppies and dogs, these places wouldn't exist. If people buy animals from these places, they have a reason to stay in business. Also, there will be an incentive for criminals to run puppy mills to supply these places. Education is key. Spread the word!

Not to support these type of places, because I don't, but I know 2 people that have been turned down for adoptions at shelters. One of them was my sister who has 2 healthy dogs. She was turned down for adopting a kitten from Jersey Shore animal shelter because her dogs did not see a vet annually for preventive care. Her dogs are healthy, and have all required shots, but the shelter would rather have a cat without a home. This is why people go to pet stores. By the way, my sister went to a different shelter and lied and told them she had no other pets. Then she was allowed to adopt a cat.

How could the dogs have had all of their shots and not been to a vet for annual checkups? It is during an annual checkup that dogs receive their shots! I don't agree with what the shelters decide at times, but if your sister doesn't take proper care of the pets she has and then lies to another shelter to obtain another pet, maybe they were right this time.

Townships have rabies clinics, which are much cheaper than the vets, and just because you don't spend hundreds at a vet for things like Lyme disease testing does not mean your dogs are not cared for. In today's financial climate, you must pick and choose which bills you are going to pay. My annual vet bill for 1 dog is well over $300 for all the testing recommended by my vet. That is alot of money. My point is that instead of trying to put pets in good homes, they make it difficult for people who do love and care for their pets, while the pet stores will sell to anyone.

frances I'm beginning to think most shelters are no better,,,,,I took Jersey Shore items for the puppies asked about them and offered to foster, I was met with total indifference ,told they were doing fine in the shelter and that the shelter was hoping this would be resolved quickly which I took to mean they could go up for adoption which means the shelter gets a hefty adoption fee,,,, as with babies puppies thrive in a home environment,,, basically at that point I was dismissed without even a thank you for the food & blankets ,,,,,,,

Lazzari, I do not have first-hand knowledge or experience with this particular shelter but it is my understanding that the Township has an ongoing relationship and contractual agreement with "Jersey Shore" so it might be a good idea for you to contact the Mayor, Council and our Business Administrator. I will reach out to them as well.

You are absolutely correct that you should not be treated with indifference. Please don't give up the good work. The animals need people like you to advocate and support their cause. And I personally APPLAUD you for your efforts.

I can tell you that we adopted our dog from the Monmouth County Animal Shelter and were blessed with the best dog ever. So please don't give up on all Shelters and in the meantime continue to lend a voice to the innocent and defenseless animals. You sound like an extremely kind and compassionate human being. Again thank you for taking the time and know that your humane actions do count.

We have to shut all of these pet stores that sell puppies. Also, we have to educate people not only NOT to support these places, but learn responsible dog ownership. I read some comments about shelters rejecting certain individuals pet adoption offers. Well, find out why and do what is necessary to get the adoption though. Shelters aren't trying to hold animals back because they want to keep animals at the shelters. They just want to make sure that the animals in which they invested so much in with rescue go to proper homes for permanent adoption...not add to the problem.

Now, let's shut these puppy places down. Spread the word to keep family, friends, and neighbors away from those places!

Lew " I read some comments about shelters rejecting certain individuals pet adoption offers. Well, find out why and do what is necessary to get the adoption though"

A shelter or rescue will not allow you to adopt if you are a senior on social security, they say you "cannot afford to love a pet" If you have never had a pet before, sorry you are out of luck. If you dont supply years and years of vet records, you are a not a candidate to adopt. If you have small children, you can not adopt. I heard one person say they were turned down because they did the humane thing and put a suffering pet down, instead of paying thousands on medical treatment that probably wouldnt work any way.

I am all for shutting down puppy stores and puppy mills. I am also all for shelters being more pro adoption and less judgemental and refuse to let people adopt because they are not as perfect as as the shelters workers think they are.

@Me
All shelters have different adoption policies to avoid having adopted animals neglected or abused and returned often. Returning a recently adopted animal doesn't help the situation. Also, there are many things needed to be taken into consideration. People, especially in this hard economy think about adoption first, then affording the animal last. That's not good. Adopting a puppy when having a baby or young child can be asking for trouble because of the attention kids and puppies need in general. Also puppies are playful, energetic, and can accidentally hurt young kids. So some shelters will reject puppy adoptions. Some people without dominant breed experience may not be able to adopt one at certain shelters for safety reasons and so adopters don't "bite off more than they can chew" and return the animal. As for vet records or pet euthanasia, those things are taken into consideration. For example, I've heard about some people euthanizing their older pets simply because it was more of a financial issue than a medical issue. If one is a senior citizen and would have trouble to keep a pet in a normal, healthy way, they may be rejected. However, there are programs in our area for seniors in need of care to get volunteer visits with service dogs.

So when it comes down to for shelters is "better safe than sorry" because they would be receiving the animal back if the adoption went sour. Also, what about issues stemming directly from pet store adoptions?

Kind of hypocritical isnt it? They will deny you a pet if you did the humane thing and put down a pet who was suffering, and at the same time the shelters are putting down animals because they have been in the shelter too long and hasnt been adopted.

Lew have you gone to a shelter and filled out the 6 page application? Some of the questions are unreal. One said when you go on vacation will you take the animal with you or find a sitter, if you answered sitter, please give the name, address and phone number of the sitter. The list is endless.

Shelters and rescues have gone over the top when it comes to adoption. In the state of NJ it is easier to adopt a child then it is to adopt a pet!

Sometimes it can be ironic in certain circumstances. Like I said, euthanasia can be a touchy subject because some will put animals to sleep as a way of convenience than medical necessity. That can pose a problem for the next adoption. Now, some shelter policies will have a certain period of time they hold an animal before being euthanized. Other shelters, like Jersey Shore Animal Shelter, have no time limit. They hold any adoptable animal in hopes of adoption as long as it is adoptable. However, all shelters are not the same.

Being a former shelter volunteer and running a K-9 service, I have seen those applications. The vacation question is very important. Also, the questions like if the animal will be living indoors is also very important. Why? Well, because there are people out there that would leave for vacation and have a friend go to the house once every few days to give the poor dog some food and check the dirty water level in the bowl. There are also some that plan on keeping their pet outdoors all year long or simply as a "watchdog" or "mouse cat" in a barn. That is not responsible ownership. Some have even used adopted animals simply for breeding a litter and then returning the pet when they are done! Those are some reasons why there are so many questions on the applications. Let's not forget the question about if there are animals that are fixed or not. Why? Because anytime there is a risk of puppies or kittens, there is a risk of strays. I know, It's a shame.

Lew let me tell you my experience with the shelter in Brick. I have done cat rescues for many years. I have one cat I got when she was only 3 weeks old. I bottle feed her for 4 weeks until she was able to eat regular cat food. She just turned 17 in Dec. I went to the Brick shelter looking at adopt another cat. I filled out the huge application, answered honestly, and gave them the phone number for my vet. I got a call the following day tell me I was unfit as a pet owner, and the should come to my home and rescue the cat I had. Want to know why I was unfit?? Because when the cat was 6 months old I had her spayed and front paws declawed!. Yup true story. My vet was like omg you wouldnt believe what these people asked me. They wanted him to fax over 16 years of vet records! They asked him if he KNEW declawing a cat was abuse. Unreal.

A lot of people I know who have tried to adopt and were turned down for really stupid reasons, either answer ads in the paper or go on Craigs list to find a pet. It is a real shame the shelters would rather destroy an animal then adopt them out.

I understand. Some policies at some shelters are absolutely ridiculous. You're not the only one that has had bad experiences at the Brick shelter. In some areas, they excel and in others they fail...and fail miserably! I used to volunteer there until management felt like I was using the shelter to "promote my business" and that the company the shelter used to train some dogs felt threatened that I would also steal business from them. Nothing could have been farther from that!!! I was there for the animals. I had a client minutes away from the shelter and would go from my client to the shelter without changing my uniform shirt. With that said, I no longer felt comfortable there and quit volunteering.

I personally don't believe in declawing cats because that's a procedure that is actually a "toe amputation." That's why shelters have problems with that and they don't want it promoted with their animals they offer for adoption. However, spay/neutering should be a must with every dog and cat to prevent the "stray" situation from getting worse.

The bottom line is this...we have many shelters in area with Ocean and Monmouth counties with different policies. The Jersey Shore Animal Shelter is not the only place we have. I recommend and encourage people interested in a cat or dog to check out all shelters and rescue organizations in the area and their policies. Some shelter even provide transportation of the pets too. The main thing is not to buy a dog from a store.

Too many people I know including myself has been turned away from The Jersey Shore Animal Center. All of us were deemed "unfit". Me, because my dog was not neutered and because I used Petco for my shots. They were also abusive to me vet too. Those people shouldn't be in charge of animals. Lunitic fanatics to put it mildly. Fuzzy has been there since 10/1/11 in a 10x8 cage. 50+ applications, all of us unfit. Fuzzy still sits in this prison cell. These shelters are the reason why people go to pet store and breeders. Maybe someone should be picketing them. Their all about the profits NOT the animals. Even sadder is all the seized puppies from Puppy's Galore went there.

If there is any shred of truth that Jersey Shore is allowing animals to linger in the shelter indefinitely because the facility is unnecessarily rejecting qualified applicants, then perhaps the Town Council/Mayor's office should request to review the records of their application screening process. The town does pay them a fee for their services, so perhaps it is time to ask for some transparency. I am sure they do a wonderful job caring for the animals and of course, animals must be matched carefully with an adopter, however, there are quite a few of these stories surfacing so one has to wonder if they are being overly critical of would be adopters.
